Finland Ranked Happiest Country in the World Once Again
Finland has once again been named the happiest country in the world, securing the top spot for the eighth consecutive year, according to the World Happiness Report 2025. Released on March 20 to mark International Day of Happiness, the report ranks 147 countries based on citizen surveys and key social factors.
The report, conducted in collaboration with Gallup and the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, assesses happiness levels using self-reported life evaluations and factors such as social support, freedom, generosity, income, and health.
Nordic Nations Dominate the Top Rankings
Along with Finland, other Nordic nations continue to lead the list:
- Finland
- Denmark
- Iceland
- Sweden
These countries consistently rank high due to quality healthcare, strong social support, economic stability, and a deep connection with nature. Finland’s tourism board highlights clean air, pure water, Northern Lights, and over 3 million saunas as key contributors to national happiness.
India’s Ranking in the World Happiness Report 2025

India has moved up from 126th to 118th place, but still remains outside the top 100 happiest nations. Surprisingly, even Ukraine (111th), despite ongoing war, and Pakistan (109th), despite economic struggles, ranked higher than India.
India’s Happiness Metrics:
While overall happiness remains low, India performed significantly better in specific benevolence factors:
- Ranked 57th for donating
- Ranked 10th for volunteering
- Ranked 74th for helping strangers
- Ranked 115th for wallet return honesty
What Makes People Happy?
Research suggests that happiness is influenced by more than just wealth and health. Some key happiness predictors include:
- Social support – Having someone to rely on
- Community engagement – Volunteering and helping others
- Belief in kindness – People who trust their communities tend to be happier
- Household size – Families of four to five members report the highest happiness levels in countries like Mexico and parts of Europe
Interestingly, the perception of kindness matters more than reality. The study found that people significantly underestimate how often lost wallets are returned, despite actual return rates being twice as high as expected.
Which Other Countries Made the List?
While European nations dominate the top 20, some surprising entries include:
- Israel (8th) – Despite ongoing conflict
- Costa Rica (6th) & Mexico (10th) – Newcomers to the top 10 happiest nations
Meanwhile, happiness is declining in the US. The United States dropped to 24th place, its lowest ranking ever, down from 11th in 2012. Researchers suggest that the rise in people dining alone (up 53% in 20 years) could be linked to decreasing social connections.
The Unhappiest Countries in the World
The bottom three countries in the rankings are:
- Afghanistan (147th) – The unhappiest country for multiple years, especially for women
- Sierra Leone (146th) – Struggling with extreme poverty
- Lebanon (145th) – Facing economic and political instability
Final Thoughts: What Can India Learn?
Despite economic growth, India still lags behind in global happiness rankings. However, its strong culture of generosity and volunteering shows signs of improvement.
