General Motors is recalling approximately 721,000 full-size trucks and SUVs equipped with its 6.2-liter V-8 engine, citing internal manufacturing defects that could lead to loss of power or complete engine failure.
The GM recall affects multiple popular models across the 2021–2024 range, including:
- Cadillac: Escalade, Escalade ESV
- Chevrolet: Silverado 1500, Tahoe, Suburban
- GMC: Sierra 1500, Yukon, Yukon XL
According to GM, the issue lies with crankshaft and connecting rod components that may have been damaged during production. Vehicles will undergo inspections at dealerships, where service teams will replace the oil filter, oil cap, and switch to a higher-viscosity 0W-40 oil. If an engine doesn’t pass inspection, it may be repaired or replaced entirely.
Roughly 598,000 of the affected vehicles are in the U.S., and GM has also issued a stop-sale order for any impacted models still sitting in dealership inventory.
This action follows a growing number of complaints, 39 to date, filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which prompted an ongoing federal investigation into engine failures related to the 6.2L V-8. While the investigation remains open, GM is moving proactively with this voluntary recall.
A GM spokesperson confirmed:
“GM will voluntarily recall certain 2021–2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Tahoe, Suburban; GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, Yukon XL; and Cadillac Escalade models equipped with 6.2-liter L87 engines to resolve manufacturing issues affecting some engines. The safety and satisfaction of our customers are our highest priorities.”
Owners of affected vehicles are expected to be contacted in the coming weeks. In the meantime, customers can check their vehicle’s recall status through GM’s VIN lookup tool or contact their local dealership.
This is just the latest in a series of large-scale recalls for GM, following recent actions on vehicles with transmission and diesel engine defects.
