Over 50 million pounds of frozen sausage and corn dog items have been recalled since fears they contain wood particles.
The Hillshire Brand Company, which is a subsidiary of Tyson Foods, issued the voluntary recall on September 27, in response to several consumer complaints and reports of injury.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) reported that the recall affects more than two dozen frozen products that were sold across the country under Tyson’s well-known Jimmy Dean and State Fair brands. The recalled products were made between March 17 and September 26 and sold both online and through big stores, and in food service establishments, school districts, and even in Department of Defense facilities.
Some of the items being recalled include corn dogs on a stick under the State Fair brand and pancakes and sausages on a stick under the Jimmy Dean brand. Affected products can be identified by looking for establishment numbers “EST-582” or “P-894” on the packaging, in addition to the described use-by or sell-by dates included in the recall notice.

The recall comes after the company received multiple consumer complaints, including five confirmed injuries linked to the affected products. An investigation found that pieces of wooden sticks had inadvertently entered the production process before the items were battered, leading to potential contamination across a wide range of products.
Tyson Foods stated in a release that the recall was made “out of an abundance of caution” and noted that no other Jimmy Dean or State Fair products are impacted. Nevertheless, the company requested consumers not to consume the recalled products. Rather, they are asked to discard them or return them to the store where purchased for a refund.
The firm also emphasized that medical treatment should be obtained by anyone who is worried about an injury involving the recalled food. Injuries thus far reported have not been specified, but wood fragments entail an obvious risk of injury.
This broad recall is the latest of a series of recent U.S. large-scale food safety issues, reflecting the difficulties of maintaining safe manufacturing with high-volume foods. While food recalls are routine, the magnitude of this one, over 50 million pounds, is noteworthy and stands to affect households nationwide.
Consumers who are unsure about the recall can call Tyson Foods themselves at 1-888-747-7611 to get more information. Meanwhile, federal officials will continue to keep an eye on the situation to make sure tainted foods are taken off the market.
