Macy’s Is Closing 150 Stores, But That’s Only Half the Story.
If your local Macy’s feels a little emptier, or gone altogether, you’re not imagining it. The iconic department store is in the middle of a massive transformation, with 150 store closures planned by 2026. And yes, 66 stores have already closed this year across 22 states.
But this isn’t just a slow fade. It’s a strategy.
Macy’s calls it their “Bold New Chapter”, a three-year turnaround plan to modernize operations, ditch underperforming locations, and open smaller-format stores that better match where and how people shop today.
Which Macy’s Stores Are Closing?
As of now, 66 stores have been shut down in 2025, including key locations in:
- California: Los Angeles, San Diego, Chula Vista
- New York: Brooklyn, Bronx, Staten Island, Massapequa
- Texas: Dallas, Houston, Plano
- Florida: Sarasota, Fort Lauderdale, Pembroke Pines
- Illinois, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Oregon, Washington, and more
You can find the complete list at the end of this article. And yes, the list may keep growing until Macy’s hits its 150-store target.
What’s Staying and Getting Better
While closures dominate headlines, Macy’s is also investing in 350 stores that are staying open. So far, 125 have already been remodeled, with upgrades to layout, lighting, and in-store experiences.
According to CEO Tony Spring, the remodeled stores are “outperforming the rest of the fleet” a rare retail win in a market full of shutdowns.
Also in the works:
- 30 new small-format Macy’s locations
- 15 new Bloomingdale’s stores
- 30 Bluemercury beauty concept stores
How This Impacts You
If you’re a Macy’s regular, here’s what to expect:
- Your local store may close and sales are already underway in those locations, often up to 60% off.
- Prices may rise on certain items due to new tariffs on goods from China. Macy’s says they’ll adjust “surgically,” not across the board.
- Some products may disappear altogether, especially private-label brands sourced from China that no longer offer value at higher costs.
- New brands are coming in, including Good American, Firi, and Nick and Zoe all part of Macy’s push to refresh its fashion mix.
Why the Closures Are Happening
According to Spring, closures are a response to consumer behavior shifts, rising retail costs, and store performance data. Larger, legacy locations simply aren’t cutting it anymore, especially with online shopping and lifestyle shifts post-COVID.
“We’re slightly ahead of expectations on recapturing sales,” Spring said in Macy’s Q1 earnings call. While short-term disruption is expected, the company says it’s already seeing positive responses where improvements have rolled out.

What’s Next?
This isn’t just about closures. It’s about survival.
Macy’s is trying to stay relevant in an era when foot traffic is down, competition is brutal, and inflation is reshaping every shopping decision. The Bold New Chapter may be painful but it’s meant to bring Macy’s closer to where shoppers are actually spending time and money.
If your store is closing, don’t panic. There are still deals to grab, nearby alternatives, and a digital presence that’s getting more attention than ever.
