Retail Shutdown: 20+ Big-Name Stores Closing for Easter – Are You Ready?

Shoppers across the U.S. are in for a surprise this Easter Sunday – Big-box stores like Costco, Target, Sam’s Club, and Aldi will be closing completely for 24 hours on April 20, 2025 – and they’re not alone.

With Easter fast approaching, a wave of nationwide retail closures is sweeping across the country. While many retailers remain open on holidays like Memorial Day or Labor Day, Easter Sunday is an exception.

Costco’s official site confirms that its doors will be shut for the day, following tradition. Target, Aldi, and Sam’s Club are doing the same. A Target spokesperson told press: “Guests can expect regular store hours on April 19 and can check Target.com or the Target app for local store information.”

So who else is closing?

According to Parade, the following retailers are confirmed to be closed on Easter Sunday 2025:

  • Costco
  • Target
  • Sam’s Club
  • Aldi
  • Best Buy
  • Publix
  • Apple
  • T.J. Maxx
  • Macy’s
  • Burlington
  • Nordstrom
  • Michaels
  • Crate & Barrel
  • Dick’s Sporting Goods
  • HomeGoods
  • Hobby Lobby
  • Bob’s Discount Furniture
  • Banana Republic
  • Goodwill
  • Lowe’s
  • The Container Store
  • JC Penney
  • Supercuts
  • Ace Hardware

What about Walmart?

If you’re planning a last-minute Easter grocery run, Walmart will remain open, as well as chains like Trader Joe’s, Kroger, and Dollar Tree – the latter already making waves with $3 Easter decor that’s flying off shelves.

Why the closures?

It’s standard practice for many retailers to close on Easter, giving employees a day off for religious observance or family time. It mirrors closures seen on other major holidays like Christmas or Thanksgiving.

What should you do?

Plan your shopping ahead of time. If you need Easter supplies, make sure to stock up before April 20. And don’t rely on your usual go-to stores – double check hours on store apps or websites.

Some good news

Retailers like Dollar Tree are still pushing out holiday deals. Their Easter decorations – including bunny figurines for just a few dollars – are being praised by customers for being cute, sturdy, and budget-friendly.

And if you’re shopping in Florida, Texas, or Pennsylvania, where Aldi has hundreds of locations, plan accordingly – those stores will all be closed.

Easter Sunday 2025 will bring widespread store closings across the retail landscape, so get your shopping done early. With dozens of retailers going dark for the day, the smartest move is to beat the rush – or risk being shut out.
