Sonar Music Festival

The Sonar Music Festival, which is held in Barcelona, is known across Europe for it’s offering in the Music creativity and Music technology segments. It was founded in 1994, and today, it has more than 124k attendees which is rising with each passing year.

Sonar Music

Sonar began in 1994 as an idea, to unite electronic dance music and artists in one place. The sole aim of this event was to create a music scene larger than just raving to music in bars and clubs. Hence, they created an experiential music scene, by bringing together large audiences, artists and video art/ graphics, all into one place.

Since it’s inception 24 years ago, Sonar has kept innovating in terms of their offerings, by bringing to their audience, emerging artists, artists who are innovating with sound and pioneers in the fields of both music creation and technology. This constant innovation led Sonar to be known not just for music but, for creativity and technology as well.

Perhaps, apart from Sonar constantly innovating itself, one point to note is the number of artists at sonar, which has risen to just over 700 last year. The growing number of artists has attracted a number of press agencies to register, making the number of registered outlets 400 in 2017 vs 40 in 1994. In entirety, Sonar alone, represents 64 countries which is a third of the world, through their artists and attendees.

One other stark offering which Sonar began offering last year is their start-up segment from the creative and technology spaces within music in Europe. As part of this, pioneers from the creative industry i.e. copyright management, music creation and from the technology space i.e. integration of bodily sensors, will choose 30 start up ideas to invest in from 10 countries.

These start-ups will be selected on the basis of quality, scale, team size and the ability to expand. Sonar has a total of 8 equity partners, of which Spotify corporate venture also plays a part. Barcelona is definitely one of the top 3 European cities to work in and the Sonar Music festival, just sweetened the deal for it’s attendees – by providing them with opportunities in the creative and technology segments that help in the creation of music. This is also a great space for artists as it helps them meet and find young creative talent.

So, if you have an idea for a start up and music is your passion, head to Sonar to leverage the incredible start up ecosystem.
