Spotify recently announced their Equal (EQL) Studio Residency Program specifically for women musical engineers and producers. This residency program came into being in collaboration with the Berklee College of Music along with Jimi Hendrix’s, Electric Lady Studios.

Starting in October, this program will essentially consist of three different programs, located in New York, Nashville, and London. The cherry on the pie is that one participant in each city will get a chance to work hands-on in a studio. The chosen resident in New York will work at both the city’s Electric Lady Studios and Spotify Studios. The Nashville and London residents will be based out of Spotify’s Secret Genius Studios. They will be exposed to invaluable networking and mentoring opportunities which will help them in their careers.

Kerry Steib, the Director of Cultural Impact at Spotify says – “Women are underrepresented as artists, songwriters, engineers, and producers. we have to use our resources to create opportunities to address this and do it with great partners across the industry. This is just the beginning.”

EDM is generally considered as a male-dominated field. However, times are now evolving and there are a lot of women artists who are stepping up to showcase their talents and shaping new sounds within the electronic realm. To name a few, there is Alison Wonderland, Rezz, Anna Lunoe, and Anja Schneider. Their energy is powerful and their creativity with music is known to evolve since each of them began to play.

To add to that, Lee Foster who is the Partner/General Manager of the Electric Lady Studios said – “Electric Lady is thrilled to partner with Spotify’s EQL Studio Residency alongside Berklee College of Music in encouragement of more women in audio production. We are strong supporters of this movement and look forward to meeting the next generation of women engineers and producers.”
