Our most talked about music streaming platform Spotify has recently launched a lighter version of itself – Spotify Lite.

This is fabulous news for all those who do not have the budgets to buy expensive phones and have limited data. A lot of other applications like Facebook messenger, Google go and YouTube go have been launched for users who have limited data and budget phones. Spotify now wants to make sure they reach out to early adopters and emerging markets to grow its 170 million monthly user base even further.

Let us dig a little deeper into what Spotify Lite is. It is 15 MB lighter than the original Spotify application which is 100 MB. If you have seen the 100MB application, you will notice that the new Spotify Lite does not have crucial features.

Once you open the app and the home screen appears, you will notice three man tabs – home, search and favorites vs home, browse, search, radio and your regular library. One other interesting fact would be that; Spotify Lite does not support extreme quality playback. This is fair, because if you want better quality music, the playback requires more data. Something else that is lacking is support that users currently have to stream audio to their other devices.

Some other key points to note would be:

a) Users cannot save songs for offline playback
b) Spotify Lite limits the ability of premium users to select specific songs and play them
c) Currently, users cannot select songs from a playlist as well

When TechCrunch spoke with Spotify, on the android tests they are conducting with the new Spotify Lite, they said – “At Spotify, we routinely conduct a number of tests in an effort to improve our user experience. Some of those tests end up paving the path for our broader user experience and others serve only as an important learning. We aren’t going to comment on specific tests at this time,”

The Spotify Lite application is currently in its beta state, with Spotify still conducting tests to improve its user experience. At this point, we are unsure on when the complete global roll out for this application will take place. We can be sure to expect that the Spotify team will be adding more features in its future updates, which will be necessary for the early adopters and emerging markets to enjoy the complete Spotify experience. Given that Choon has launched the worlds, first monetized playlists, Spotify will definitely have up its game with the Spotify Lite version.
