While most artists are using this unexpected time-in during quarantine in different ways, everyone is dealing with it in their own way.
Steve Aoki who has been known to be a workhorse, is definitely not letting this time go to any waste. As we came to know with the insight on his life we got through the 2016 documentary “I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead” he isn’t one to sit idle even in normal circumstances. So when he revealed he had something new and different in the works, right after he dropped a massive 27-track album, we were pleasantly surprised.
In a recent conversation with the Daily Star newspapers Wired column, he said, “I’ve been going down to my lab, my studio, and it’s interesting, I’ve been thinking differently about my process as I have had a lot of time. And I’ve been creating a new alter ego, a new artist name, and I am making a whole different sound. I’m so excited to share that with the world when it’s time.”
Aoki also dropped Neon Future IV just days ago. The massive album comes as the latest edition to his Neon Future album series which first started in 2014. The 27-track album has a definite pop-focused feel to it. The album features a plethora of collaborators on it from Icona Pop to alan Walker and Backstreet Boys to Sting!
The album series shows how Aoki’s sound has evolved over the years and speaking about the transformation of his soundscape, Aoki said, “The central force of Neon Future is more about the narrative of the evolution of Neon Future I, II, III and IV. If you listen to each album back to back, you can hear this musical evolution and that is most important for my fans to take away. Each volume in the series goes hand in hand with the songs that are meant to tell our future story.”
What genre this new alias of Aoki’s will remains to be seen, but back in 2014 Aoki had revealed he was looking to work on a deep house alias which never seemed to see the light of day. We guess we’ll just have to wait and watch what this fresh new Aoki sound is when the time is ripe.
