Walmart’s stores are stepping straight into the future – and it’s taking notes from its own cousin, Sam’s Club.
The retail giant has just opened its first “store of the future” in Cypress, and let’s just say the tech updates are impossible to miss. The most eye-catching addition? QR codes slapped onto displays throughout the store – but don’t confuse them with checkout shortcuts. These barcodes aren’t for paying – they’re meant to unlock digital tools that give shoppers more info about products as they browse.
Sound familiar? That’s because Sam’s Club has been doing something pretty similar. A remodeled location in Texas rolled out QR code displays too, giving members an easy way to scan products using their phones and pull up extra details. Walmart’s now jumping on that same train, and it’s clear they’re going all in.
The Cypress store isn’t just testing a one-off feature – it’s part of a massive makeover plan that includes updating over 650 Walmart stores across 47 states and Puerto Rico. According to Walmart execs, the goal is to blur the lines between physical and digital shopping to make the entire experience fast, seamless, and way more convenient. Their exact words? A “seamless omni journey.” Translation: scan your way through the store, grab your goods, and skip the hassle.
Beyond the tech upgrades, the revamped Cypress location has a drive-thru pharmacy, a Hispanic bakery with fresh tortillas, made-to-order sushi, and even a Dunkin’ section for donut lovers. Outside, there’s a fuel station with eight pumps that can serve up to 16 cars at once. The store’s launch has already created over 300 new jobs, showing Walmart’s not just about digital innovation – they’re investing in communities too.
Meanwhile, Sam’s Club isn’t backing down. Their warehouses are also getting futuristic facelifts. At the remodeled Texas location, traditional checkouts were ripped out completely in favor of the “Scan and Go” feature available on the Sam’s Club app. Shoppers use their phones to scan items as they shop and then pay on the app – no waiting in line, no cashier. But not everyone’s a fan. Some members have threatened to quit if Sam’s Club makes Scan and Go the only way to pay.
With both Walmart and Sam’s Club betting big on tech and speed, the future of shopping might be a whole lot more screen-based – and checkout counters might be headed for extinction.
