Walmart Teams Up With OpenAI to Let Shoppers Buy Products Through ChatGPT

Walmart is jumping its artificial intelligence aspirations to a whole new level with an all-new deal with OpenAI that will enable consumers to buy products directly from ChatGPT.

The retail giant confirmed that the integration will introduce Instant Checkout, an all-new in-chat shopping feature developed by OpenAI aimed at making AI-powered retail more interactive and convenient.

While neither retailer has given an official launch date, Walmart announced the feature would be live with customers “soon.” The change marks a fundamental shift in how shoppers might browse the web – trading conventional search bars and product lists for chat-like, AI-driven shopping interfaces.

“For decades now, eCommerce shopping moments have had a search box and a long list of item results. That is going to change,” Walmart CEO Doug McMillon stated. “There is a native AI experience arriving that is multi-media, personalized and contextual.”

The release demonstrates Walmart’s continued investment in AI innovation in all areas of its business. The retailer has been building artificial intelligence for more than seven years, creating tools that simplify customer service and enhance the efficiency of employees. One of its first initiatives was ‘Ask Sam,’ a voice assistant used by Walmart and Sam’s Club associates to automate tasks in stores.

Now, with the introduction of OpenAI’s ChatGPT into its digital ecosystem, Walmart aims to enhance the customer experience by making shopping smarter, faster, and more intuitive. Users will be able to browse and buy products without leaving the chat, using conversational prompts and personalized recommendations generated in real time.

McMillon highlighted that AI will transform not only consumers but also Walmart’s enormous employees. In a workforce convention at the company’s Bentonville headquarters, he presented AI as a technology that is “going to change literally every job.”

The CEO of Walmart, and indeed many other global CEOs, agreed that artificial intelligence will reshape jobs across sectors. He conceded that certain jobs and manual tasks would be obliterated by automation, but also emphasized that AI will generate completely new opportunities and new job roles.

Consistent with that vision, Walmart recently partnered with OpenAI to provide free AI training to both frontline and office staff, preparing them for what the company terms “the jobs of tomorrow.” The move demonstrates Walmart’s leadership in being proactive about upskilling its workers in the face of accelerating technological change.

“Walmart has a history of getting stronger in moments of change,” a company spokesperson told FOX Business. “And with AI, we’re not waiting around – we’re leaning in to make it work for our customers, associates, and partners.”

The partnership also arrives as leading technology companies such as OpenAI and Nvidia compete to scale computing power, data storage, and networking capacity to keep pace with accelerating AI demands. Business leaders in various sectors are paying close attention to how these alliances take shape, as they indicate the direction of future retail and digital customer experiences.

Through Instant Checkout with ChatGPT, Walmart is placing its bet on the marriage of AI and online shopping to revolutionize ordinary shopping. It means fewer clicks, more relevant recommendations, and an effortless method of finding and purchasing products – all within one chat window for consumers.
