If you recently picked up a pack of vine ripe tomatoes from Gordon Food Service, check your fridge, there’s a recall you need to know about.
Ray & Mascari Inc., based in Indianapolis, has issued an urgent recall of their 4 Count Vine Ripe Tomatoes due to potential Salmonella contamination. The tomatoes, packaged in clear plastic clamshell containers and weighing 20 oz. (1 lb. 4 oz.), were sold in 11 states and could pose a serious health risk, especially to children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems.
Here’s what to look for:
- UPC Code: 7 96553 20062 1
- Lot Numbers: RM250424 15250B or RM250427 15250B
- Label: “VINE RIPE TOMATOES” and “Packed by Ray & Mascari Inc., Indianapolis, IN 46204”
These products were distributed across Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Wisconsin.
The issue came to light after Hanshaw & Capling Farms in Florida notified Ray & Mascari that their facility might have been exposed to Salmonella, prompting the recall. Although no illnesses have been reported yet, consumers are being urged not to eat the tomatoes and to throw them away immediately or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
Salmonella is no joke. For healthy people, it can still cause days of fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps. But in rare cases, it can lead to life-threatening infections.
If you have questions or want to report any symptoms, you can call Ray & Mascari Inc. directly at 1-317-637-0234, Monday through Saturday between 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. EST.
This recall is a reminder to double-check your produce, especially when it comes in bulk or clamshell packaging. Safety first, salad second.
