Seattle shoppers are down to the wire as Whole Foods Market confirms it’s closing its Capitol Hill store for good by June 20.
The beloved grocery store, located at Madison and Broadway, is set to shut its doors permanently, leaving loyal customers just days to make their final grocery runs and say goodbye. While the closure hits hard for locals who’ve made the store part of their routine, the company is already looking ahead with openings lined up across the U.S.
Whole Foods isn’t ghosting Seattle entirely, though. A spokesperson confirmed that all employees from the closing location will be transferred to nearby stores. That means no job losses, just a shift in location. According to the company, the decision came after regular performance evaluations. “Like any business, we regularly evaluate the performance and growth potential of each of our stores and make decisions to position the company for long-term success,” a company rep shared.
But while one door closes in Seattle, several more are opening nationwide. In fact, the chain just opened a new “smaller format store concept” in Hell’s Kitchen, NYC, on June 4. This smaller-sized outlet is a new direction for Whole Foods, signaling its plan to test unique markets and retail formats. And it doesn’t stop there.
The next big opening is scheduled for June 26 in Midtown Miami. This new store comes with a full-service coffee bar that’ll feature Cuban-style coffee drinks, including the Cubano, Cortadito, and Café con Leche, perfect for the area’s rich cultural flavor. A day earlier, on June 25, St. Charles, Illinois, will also welcome a brand-new Whole Foods store to the neighborhood. And let’s not forget Las Vegas, which already saw a fresh Whole Foods location open its doors in May.
Here’s a quick look at the Whole Foods expansion lineup:
Location | Opening Date | Highlight |
---|---|---|
Hell’s Kitchen, NYC | June 4 | New small-format concept store |
St. Charles, IL | June 25 | Full-scale store opening |
Midtown Miami, FL | June 26 | Coffee bar with Cuban-style drinks |
Las Vegas, NV | May (already open) | Full Whole Foods experience |
Despite the Capitol Hill closure, Whole Foods clearly isn’t slowing down. In fact, it’s doubling down on growth in hot markets where demand is high and concepts can be tested. It’s a classic case of shifting resources from where it’s not working to where it’s booming.
And it’s not just Whole Foods making big retail moves right now. Coffee chain 7 Brew is expanding too, adding seven new locations to its 300+ store count. Since launching in 2017, this Starbucks rival has been on a rapid rise, and now more states are about to get a taste of its signature drinks and drive-thru energy.
So, while some Seattleites may feel the sting of losing a favorite Whole Foods, shoppers across Miami, Illinois, New York, and Vegas have plenty to get excited about. Whether it’s organic produce, specialty groceries, or café-style coffee bars, the chain is doing what it does best: evolving with demand and keeping its name strong in the grocery game.
