Costco shoppers are still fuming after their beloved $1 churro disappeared from the food court, and it looks like it’s not coming back.
The iconic snack, a deep-fried cinnamon sugar classic, was quietly removed from the menu early last year with no real explanation. Since then, customers have been venting online, remembering the churro as a fan favorite and calling it the “GOAT” of Costco food court items.
What replaced it? A $2.49 double chocolate chunk cookie that has stirred up even more frustration. Many say it’s just too big, too sweet, and simply not the same. The churro had its own loyal fanbase, with people sharing childhood memories tied to it. One shopper said, “My kids mourn the churro like a grandparent.” Another commented, “I have fond memories of going shopping with my mom as a kid. I was always SO stoked when she would give in and get us a churro to share.”
The old-school churro packed 570 calories, 20 grams of fat, and 25 grams of sugar, yet fans didn’t care. It was tasty, nostalgic, and cheap at just $1. But even before it was discontinued completely, the churro had undergone changes. A newer, twisted version of the treat was introduced, and it didn’t exactly impress. Many said it had taste and texture issues, and some suspect that low sales of that version may have led to the entire snack being shelved.
Despite scattered rumors and hopeful speculation, there’s been no word from Costco on bringing it back. The company has stayed completely silent, offering no reason for the removal and no updates since. The only thing fans know is that it disappeared during the pandemic and was replaced by a dessert that just doesn’t hit the same.
On social media, nostalgia posts regularly go viral, with hundreds of shoppers chiming in to say how much they miss the churro. A recent post simply asking, “Who misses the churro?” drew in tons of emotional responses. One person summed it up by saying, “Everything I love gets taken away from me. I’m just not interested in the giant warm cookie.”
The food court still offers other favorites like the $1.50 hot dog and soda combo, $1.99 slices of cheese or pepperoni pizza, rotisserie chicken Caesar salad, and turkey sandwiches for $6.99. But none of them have sparked quite the same level of grief as the churro’s departure.
There’s no telling if Costco will ever bring it back, especially with the cookie now taking its place and seemingly doing fine sales-wise. But if fan loyalty counts for anything, the churro might still have a chance at a comeback, even if it’s just in spirit.
