Last week, the Grammy-award winning EDM superstar Zedd hosted his very first AMA on Reddit.

A chance for his fans to literally ask him anything, we decided to pick a few of the key takeaways from the session and highlight them here.

In a tell-all session keeping it real, AMA’s are usually in-depth answers coming directly from the artists themselves and hence lead to insight and a deeper look into aspects and perspectives never explored before.

Without a doubt, one of the most prevalent questions on everyone’s mind was around when we would be blessed with a new Zedd album. The producer revealed that it’s definitely a work in progress, but also that during quarantine, he “just didn’t feel the inspiration” needed to complete the album, but does have some “amazing songs close-to-finished.”

He had also previously stated, “Just to be clear: my album isn’t coming out “soon”. It’s coming out when it’s done and perfect. Same philosophy as my other albums.”

From how he is dealing with depression in these tough times to a potentially upcoming collaboration with Porter Robinson, here are some excerpts from Zedd’s real and raw AMA.

What are you doing now in this Corona Time? Apart from Gaming?

Zeddofficial – I certainly can say that I have felt more depressed than ever before in my life. I’m struggling quite a lot so I don’t know if I’m a good example here. While I rarely see people in person, I made a Discord group with my friends and we either game every night or at least talk to each other.
It has really helped me tremendously throughout quarantine. It gives me a feeling of not being alone.
Apart from that, I have spent a lot of time doing some projects around my house, like the chicken coop, growing a vegetable garden, re-doing my backyard, etc.

Will you and Porter Robinson ever make a song together again? (Referencing Clarity) and After a long evolution of your sound through the years, I would love to hear what it would sound like if you, Skrillex, and Porter Robinson worked on something together.

Zeddofficial – We recently talked about getting together and make some music together. Hoping it’ll happen. :)
I would love that! Porter and I actually recently talked about getting together and working on some music. The pandemic certainly doesn’t make it easier but I’d love to get in a room with them. We “grew up” in this scene together. It would probably be really special.

When’s a new album coming out?

Zeddofficial – I decided to push back the album to when things are more back to normal.
I really wanted it to come out this year but I put the album on stand-by because during quarantine I just didn’t feel the inspiration to make this the best album possible.

Luckily I’ve started on it and have some amazing songs close-to-finished already but RIGHT THIS SECOND I just don’t feel the inspiration I need to feel to come up with the quality of music I want to come up with.

My plan is to work on music for other people in the meantime and when there is a rough idea of when clubs etc may re-open and the pandemic is under control I’m gonna shift gears back into album mode!

Which artist would you love to collaborate with? and Who are your biggest musical influences?

Zeddofficial – There’s a lot of artists I’d love to collaborate with, some of which are Radiohead, Adele, Bruno Mars, Drake, Post Malone, Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa, and many many more.

My biggest musical influences are Queen, Jeff Buckley, Radiohead, Deep Purple, Genesis, King Crimson among others.

What song has been your biggest challenge and how did you overcome it?

Zeddofficial – I think “Addicted to a Memory” is probably the one that took the longest to finish and was the biggest challenge.

I started the song with this patch I found in this synth called “SynthMaster2” (highly recommend it btw!!) and created the first drop quite quickly. However, after building the track further I created this giant build-up towards the end and couldn’t quite figure out the perfect “finale” for the song.

It felt like it needed to be melodic and enthusiastic but the key of the song made it quite tricky.

The song is in “d flat” and that note, in the sub-octave, is very difficult to hear since it really is too low for most speakers. So the key was to distort the sub and layer a higher octave on top of it for the note to be audible properly. While this is, more or less, a standard way to make your 808 or subaudible, within the mix I made it ended up being incredibly challenging and even required a separate master JUST for that last drop of Addicted of a Memory.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in the music industry?

Zeddofficial – This is a difficult one as my advice would generally be “do things differently than anyone else!”.
Nobody knows YOU the way YOU do. So take what I say with a grain of salt, but genuinely trust your instinct and gut and go with what YOU think is right in all aspects. Don’t let anyone tell you that your path isn’t viable because nobody understands your path better than yourself.

Being in the music industry for the right reason is something I found helpful throughout my career. I have made music since I was a little kid and was used to never making any money with it. It was a pure passion and helped me focus on the right thing: THE MUSIC.
I see a lot of people commenting things along the lines of “I wanna be famous and rich” – which is showing me the goal isn’t the music but the fame or money that comes along with it.

Furthermore; WORK HARD. Try to always do the VERY best at every single thing you do and spend TIME on it. There are no shortcuts! When I started making electronic music, I produce 1 entire album that I never realized and only gave to my friends. The whole purpose of it was to just get better at producing music. Getting good at something takes time. Be patient. Be willing to re-learn and re-start. Don’t get discouraged by failure. It’ll happen along the way. It’s inevitable. Always set yourself goals that are too hard to reach. You might end up finding yourself reaching them sooner than you think.
