Ivan Toney isn’t worried about what people think, and he’s definitely not losing sleep over critics of his move to the Saudi Pro League.
After a solid run of form with Al-Ahli, the striker is back in the England squad for the first time since his departure from Brentford last summer. And he insists he never feared the move would end his England career.
Speaking to reporters, Toney was clear: “No,” he said when asked if he thought his transfer would hurt his international chances. “You see with me, I think if you’re just doing the right thing, playing football, playing well and scoring goals, a striker’s job, that’s what you’re in a team to do, it doesn’t matter where you play in the world. I feel like you should still get the chance.”
Toney’s confidence seems to have paid off. His form in Saudi Arabia has clearly caught Gareth Southgate’s attention, and he’s now back in the mix ahead of the next international window. “I think it’s been proven, me being back here and being back amongst the boys,” he added. “It feels good to see the faces again and it feels good to get stuck in.”
With next year’s World Cup on the horizon, Toney is aiming to secure his place in the final squad. But beyond that, he’s also keen to challenge some of the perceptions people have about the Saudi league. The 28-year-old says the standard of football is much higher than people think, and critics should actually watch the games before jumping to conclusions.
“Everyone always has their opinion. They’re going to have their opinion on everything,” Toney said. “You have to witness it and be there to realise what it’s like. You can’t have an opinion on something you’ve never seen.”
That’s a message he wants football fans, and possibly even national selectors, to take seriously. “People always just assume certain things without seeing it, so I suggest people have a look before they start making judgements,” he said.
“It’s tough, it’s not easy. There’s some good footballers and it’s going in the right direction. I’m sure it will continue to do that over the years.”
Toney is living proof that top form speaks louder than league labels. While his path back into the England team might have raised eyebrows, he’s proving that quality and goals will always open doors, no matter where you play your football.
