Pep Guardiola has made it clear that Manchester City need new energy heading into next season, and he’s counting on new signings and staff changes to make that happen.
After a rare season without a major trophy, Guardiola believes the club needs a serious injection of fresh talent and motivation.
Speaking to ESPN, Guardiola didn’t hold back. “Always the same: Give me good players,” he said. “The rest, it doesn’t matter.” For him, it’s simple – top-quality players can adjust to any system or tactical demand.
But it’s not just about skill. Guardiola wants mentality. Players who walk into tough arenas like Anfield or the Bernabéu and still show up at their best. That confidence and hunger is what he believes separates good players from world-class ones.
City fans can expect a summer of big changes. With coaching assistants Juanma Lilo, Inigo Dominguez, and set-piece coach Carlos Vicens all on their way out, there’s room for a reset behind the scenes too. Guardiola said he’ll miss them personally but sees this as a chance for reinvention.
“I’m going to lose people that I adore,” he said. “But it happened before. In 15 years, a lot left. Everyone cheated on me!” he joked, making light of the situation. Still, he’s serious about what new faces can bring.
“The new ones, younger people and new players, they always bring this energy,” he explained. “You see the eyes – ‘I want to do it,’ ‘I want to be there.’ It changes everything in training.”
Guardiola dismissed the idea that success should lead to standing still. “If we win, I don’t have to adjust anything? That is a mistake,” he said. “When you win, you also have to adjust.” That ongoing need to evolve is central to how he operates, no matter the team’s position.
He also downplayed the emotional payoff of adding more trophies. “One more Premier League, one more Champions League – it’s not going to change my life,” he admitted. What does matter is the energy and drive from the people around him.
As for tactics? They’ll shift depending on the new players. Guardiola is flexible. “We will adapt the movement or tactics or whatever things we say as managers for the quality of the players,” he noted.
So while City fans might be disappointed with how the last season ended, there’s plenty of reason to look forward. Guardiola wants a refreshed squad full of ambition. And knowing his track record, it’s a safe bet he’ll find the right pieces to make it work.
Big names might be coming to the Etihad. But for Pep, it’s not just about talent – it’s about players and coaches who bring new life to a team always chasing perfection.
