Ruben Amorim Defends Andre Onana After Europa League Blunders

Ruben Amorim isn’t throwing Andre Onana under the bus – even after a rough Europa League night that left fans fuming. The Manchester United boss had Onana’s back after two serious blunders helped Lyon to a 2-2 draw in the first leg of their quarter-final clash.

Onana’s errors were hard to ignore. Both goals stemmed from his mishandling, reigniting criticism from fans and pundits alike. Former United midfielder Nemanja Matic even went as far as calling him “one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United history” before the match.

But Amorim? He’s not buying the pile-on.

“There’s nothing I can say to Andre in this moment that will help him,” Amorim told TNT Sports. “I’m really confident in Andre. We keep doing the same thing – training, reviewing the games, choosing the best XI to win.”

Instead of calling him out, the manager actually pointed the finger at himself.

“If you play football long enough, you’re going to make mistakes,” he said. “Honestly, I’ve made more errors than the players in the past month. It happens.”

Ruben Amorim’s defense is a bold move, especially in a high-pressure competition like the Europa League, where fans are demanding results and United’s season is hanging by a thread. But his message is clear: this is a team, and they win (or mess up) together.

Onana has been under fire ever since joining United. Despite flashes of brilliance, inconsistency has haunted him – and in Europe, those mistakes get magnified. Still, Amorim is pushing stability over drama.

He also hinted that no rash changes will happen before the second leg. “When the time comes, I’ll choose the best XI. Right now, we just keep working,” he said.

It’s not the first time Amorim has opted for calm over chaos, and it won’t be the last. But this approach – defending a mistake-prone player in public while presumably sorting things out privately – could go either way. It builds loyalty, sure, but it also puts trust on the line. Fans will be watching closely when Onana steps between the posts again.

With the second leg looming and qualification on the line, Manchester United’s fate could still rest on the same keeper everyone’s talking about. Let’s hope, for his sake and the team’s, it’s not déjà vu all over again.
