After a year of waiting, Xbox players finally have a release date for Black Myth: Wukong.
The fantasy action-RPG from Chinese developer Game Science will officially launch on Xbox Series X|S on 20 August 2025. That’s exactly one year after its original debut on PlayStation 5 and PC.
Game Science confirmed the Xbox release this week and said pre-orders for Black Myth: Wukong on Xbox Series X|S will go live on 19 June. Players who pre-order the game before 11 July will get a 20% discount on both the standard and premium versions.
So why the year-long delay? Game Science says it came down to quality. The studio claimed it needed extra time to make sure the Xbox version met its “internal quality standards.” In a statement posted to its website, the team said: “Fortunately, we were able to complete this challenging task smoothly within the first year of the game’s official release.”
If you’ve been holding out for the Xbox version and avoided the game on other platforms, Game Science says you’re in for a treat. “We’re confident it will stand among the finest ARPGs available on Xbox,” the developer stated.
Earlier this year, the conversation around the Xbox version got a bit murky. Game Science founder and CEO Feng Ji (aka “Yocar”) pointed out that the Xbox Series S was particularly difficult to optimize for due to its 10GB of shared memory. He mentioned on Chinese social platform Weibo that achieving stable performance required “a few years of optimisation experience.”
That sparked online speculation that Sony had secured a secret exclusivity deal to keep Black Myth: Wukong off Xbox for as long as possible. Microsoft later stepped in to shut those rumors down, saying the delay was not due to any platform limitations or exclusivity arrangements.
Whatever the reason, the game is finally arriving for Xbox fans, and with a discount to sweeten the wait. Black Myth: Wukong has been widely praised for its stunning visuals, deep combat system, and fresh take on Chinese mythology. It blends elements of souls-like combat with fluid martial arts, powered by Unreal Engine 5, and has built up a strong following since its original announcement.
With the Xbox version launching on the game’s one-year anniversary, it’s now set to reach a wider audience. Whether you’re returning to the story of Sun Wukong or experiencing it for the first time, August 2025 is looking like a solid win for Xbox players.
