EA Confirms Three Marvel Games Still In Development After Black Panther Cancellation

Electronic Arts has confirmed it’s still working on at least three Marvel games, despite recently cancelling its upcoming Black Panther title and shutting down the studio behind it, Cliffhanger Games.

The publisher made the announcement shortly after revealing a wave of layoffs and refocusing efforts on its core franchises.

On May 28, 2025, EA pulled the plug on the Black Panther project, which was still in early development at Cliffhanger Games. The studio, formed in 2023 specifically to develop this Marvel title, was closed as part of EA’s internal restructuring. The company said it wanted to redirect resources toward its established IPs, like Battlefield, The Sims, Apex Legends, and Skate.

Even so, EA has made it clear that it’s not walking away from Marvel. In a statement to IGN, Laura Miele, president of EA Entertainment, said: “Our partnership with Marvel remains strong and our multi-title, long-term collaboration continues.” She didn’t go into detail about the other games in the pipeline, but emphasized the ongoing relationship with Marvel Games.

A Marvel spokesperson added more context, confirming that development on the Iron Man game is still on track. That project, led by Motive Studios, is the first of EA’s Marvel games announced to the public. According to Marvel, “The multi-title, long-term relationship between Marvel Games and EA, a creative collaboration focused on original storytelling with various, beloved Marvel characters, remains strong. Development of our console and PC titles, beginning with Marvel’s Iron Man, is led by Motive Studios.”

This statement puts to rest speculation that EA might be stepping away from its Marvel deal entirely. The cancellation of Black Panther was a big surprise to many, especially since the character is a major part of Marvel’s global brand. But EA appears to be streamlining its efforts, betting on games with clearer commercial potential or smoother development timelines.

In an internal email obtained by IGN, Miele explained that the decision to cancel the Black Panther game wasn’t taken lightly, but it was necessary to “sharpen EA’s focus and put our creative energy behind the most significant growth opportunities.” That means existing franchises and potentially more profitable, proven concepts take priority.

While it’s disappointing for fans looking forward to a dedicated Black Panther game, the continuation of the Iron Man project and two other unnamed Marvel titles shows that EA still sees value in its Marvel partnership. More information on these upcoming titles is expected later this year, possibly during major gaming showcases or EA’s own events.

For now, gamers can look forward to EA’s take on Iron Man and remain hopeful about what other Marvel heroes might be getting the spotlight next.
