The long-running Final Fantasy VII remake series could finally be making its way to a Nintendo console.
Director Naoki Hamaguchi has revealed that the Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is being developed for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, opening the door for the full remake trilogy to follow. Fans have been hoping for this crossover ever since the remake journey began back in 2020, and now it’s looking more possible than ever.
Speaking in Nintendo’s Creator’s Voices video series, Hamaguchi shared his excitement about bringing the Final Fantasy VII remake series to a portable platform like the Switch 2. “I’m very excited to see this game playable on a portable system,” he said, hinting that Square Enix and Nintendo could be building a strong long-term partnership around the Final Fantasy brand.
The biggest reveal, though, was Hamaguchi’s confirmation that the Switch 2 will have enough power to support the technically demanding Final Fantasy VII remake series. That’s a massive green light for fans who worried Nintendo’s next-gen console wouldn’t be able to handle high-end titles that were originally made for the PlayStation 5. If Intergrade runs smoothly, it’s pretty likely the rest of the trilogy will follow suit.
For Hamaguchi, this project is deeply personal. He shared that the original Final Fantasy VII is what inspired him to pursue a career in the gaming industry. Now, working on its remake and potentially bringing it to Nintendo’s new platform feels like a full-circle moment. “The fact that it happens to be the Final Fantasy VII remake series, considering the original game gave me the opportunity to pursue a career in the games industry, makes me feel like it was fate,” he said.
He also got a little emotional, saying how much it would mean to him to see two generations, those who grew up with the original and today’s younger players, bond over Cloud, Tifa, and the rest of the crew on the Switch 2. “It would make me very happy if two generations connected and shared a bond over the characters,” he said.
While there’s no official release date yet, it’s clear that Square Enix is getting serious about the Switch 2. If you’ve been holding off on buying a PlayStation just to play the Final Fantasy VII remake series, your wait might finally be worth it. All signs point to an epic journey coming soon to Nintendo’s next big thing.
