Born in Johannesburg but now residing in Bristol, Ashton started his musical journey at the age of 5 when he began learning the violin. Not too long after, he began teaching himself to play the guitar. Being born into a fundamentalist Christian family he couldn’t listen to conventional radio stations, so began listening to the radio in secret and writing his own music as well as copying songs he had heard. However, as much as he loved the guitar, he found true escapism in the piano, which he taught himself to play after a brief period of lessons. The passion was found not in playing other peoples music, but in discovering melody and harmony by himself. By the age of 13, Ashton's violin studies had led him to being awarded a music scholarship, where he was offered the opportunity to study music theory, play the violin in orchestras and sing in choirs. However, his love of music was still tied to the escapism of creation and after playing in several bands, he chose to dive into the world of music production. This new-found love of electronic music led to him briefly being mentored by a producer at Sony Africa, where he would spend his time after school. Now certain that music production was his calling, he made the biggest decision of his life and re-located to the UK where he studied a degree in sound design. This ultimately led to him living in Bristol, the latest stop on his journey, and it's clear when you listen to Gallago that his tracks ooze with all the many influences he's picked up along the way.
