Key Decision on Hybrid Model Hosting By ICC

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially announced that the 2025 Champions Trophy will follow a hybrid hosting model.

This decision, finalized after prolonged deliberations, allows India to play all their matches in Dubai, while the tournament’s remaining fixtures will be divided between Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).The consensus was reached during an informal meeting of ICC members, chaired by Jay Shah, at the ICC headquarters in Dubai. This decision marks a significant step in managing the complex geopolitical challenges that have often affected cricketing ties between India and Pakistan.

Background and PCB’s Role

The hybrid model was first proposed by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) as a compromise to retain its hosting rights. Initially resistant, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) later agreed to this arrangement under the condition that the same model would apply to ICC tournaments held in India until 2027.

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi emphasized the importance of maintaining fairness in cricket’s governance. “Cricket should win, that’s most important, but with respect for all. We are going to do what’s best for cricket,” Naqvi remarked after the meeting.

Impact on Future Tournaments

This hybrid model will extend beyond the Champions Trophy. For the ICC T20 World Cup in 2026, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, Pakistan will play all their matches in Sri Lanka. Similarly, during the Women’s World Cup in 2025, Pakistan’s matches will take place at a neutral venue.

The arrangement reflects a broader agreement to ensure smooth operations in ICC events despite regional tensions. “It’s a win-win situation for all stakeholders,” an ICC source stated, acknowledging the challenges of accommodating both cricketing and political considerations.

Challenges and Delays

The uncertainty surrounding the hosting model caused significant delays in finalizing the Champions Trophy schedule. According to ICC’s broadcasting contract, the schedule should have been released 90 days in advance, a deadline that has already been missed. However, the resolution of these issues paves the way for an imminent announcement of the schedule.

Representatives from Star Sports, the tournament’s official broadcaster, were present in Dubai to discuss operational details. A follow-up meeting with ICC officials is scheduled for this weekend.

Fan Reactions and Anticipation

The hybrid model has elicited mixed reactions from fans. While some see it as a pragmatic solution to geopolitical challenges, others have expressed concerns about the logistical complexities and potential disruptions. Despite this, excitement for the Champions Trophy remains high, as cricket enthusiasts eagerly await the final schedule and team line-ups.

The Champions Trophy, returning after eight years, promises to deliver high-stakes cricket and rekindle rivalries on the global stage. Fans are particularly excited about the possibility of an India-Pakistan showdown, a fixture that has historically been the tournament’s centerpiece.
