Founded in 2015, Dichotomic Records has firmly cemented it’s place as one of the scene’s most exciting, new emerging labels, thanks to it’s eye for detail and keen ear for the best Progressive, Minimal and Techno infused records on the planet.

Founded by Beatport number 1 artist JMekka, owner of legendary label iBreaks Records, and his business partner Deeplastik, the label aims to release only the very best deep and heavy sounds about.

Despite being in operation for just over a year, it’s safe to say the label has a very impressive array of artists on its roster, including names such as: SICHI, Dark Overdose and Alexic Rod, known to many as the king of Breaks Colombo. With a long list of highly anticipated projects on the way, along with huge plans for 2016, we sat down with label boss JMekka to discuss the rise of Dichotomic Records.

T.H.E – Hi JMekka, thanks for taking time to sit down and chat to us about your exciting new label Dichotomic Records. To get things kicked off, can you tell about the idea behind starting the label?

JMekka – Hi. The idea to create this label came after a meeting between myself (SICHI aka JMekka) and my label partner Deeplastik. We’ve been linked to other areas of the electronic music scene for quite a long time and it totally made sense to start this new project, by joining forces and merging our experiences gained over a decade and a half.

T.H.E – What are your goals/what do you strive to accomplish with the label?

JMekka – The goal is simple. Having a platform that allows us to release the music we love including some of our own productions.

T.H.E – From the moment you decided to start a label, how long did it take for the label to be launched?

JMekka – It probably took around a year. When we decided to start the project we already had the main 3 artists, all our contacts, links and so on. We didn’t want to rush things and do solid steps in each stage of the label creation, and it seems that everything is working out nicely.

T.H.E – For those who don’t know, what is involved in the setting up of a record label?

JMekka – You need your branding, distribution channels, your social network set up, but most importantly good music.

T.H.E – What day-to-day work is involved in running a record label?

JMekka – You need to run your release schedule. This involves A&R work, which involves listening to music and signing tracks you like for your label. You also have to master the tracks, design the artworks and upload them to the distribution company. Then in the promotion side of things you need to let people know about your label’s release. You can do this by yourself, which could prove to be a tedious job especially if you don’t know many people in the industry, or you can use a PR company to help you with this side of things. Then you have to prepare statements, pay your artists and so on.

T.H.E – How many people work at the label and what are their roles?

JMekka – At the moment we have 4 people working at the label. One takes care of the A&R and another person deals with the release schedule and everything related to it. We also have an in-house graphic designer and finally, another person taking care of social networks.

T.H.E – How would you describe the sound of Dichotomic Records and why did you choose this musical direction?

JMekka – We’re going to be swinging between Minimal House, Progressive House and everything in between. Our sound won’t be determined by a specific genre as such as we just want to release tracks that really appeal to us. At this early stage is a bit difficult to describe our sound, as is more an instructive nature than a logical one.

T.H.E – So far you have had artists such as Alexic Rod, Deeplastik, Dark Overdoes and SICHI release on the label, can we expect any of the artists that have previously released on the label make a return?

JMekka – This is actually the hard core of the label and we will definitely see more tracks from these artists on Dichotomic.

T.H.E – Alexic Rod is returning to the label with his upcoming EP titled ‘Bright Day EP’. What aspects of this record stood out to you and resulted in you signing the EP?

JMekka – Everything this guy does is pure gold. I’ve been working with Alexic Rod in other projects for roughly a decade, all with excellent results. I think this EP is very original, sounds crisp and really grabs you’re attention once you listen to it.

T.H.E – What can we expect in terms of new music from the label in the near future?

JMekka – We have a few releases lined up but to be honest I don’t want to spoil it, so just keep an eye on the label and you’ll see some new great tracks being released.

T.H.E – Can we expect to see any new artists join your emerging roster in the near future?

JMekka – Yes, we’re in conversations with some other artists who are interested in joining our label. Again, well see this sooner than later.

T.H.E – Could we see the label expand into other areas of the music business?

JMekka – It’s early days for this. We do already work in other areas of the music business, but not under Dichotomic. Maybe one day everything will merge and we’ll become a more global brand.

T.H.E – What can we expect from Dichotomic Records in future?

JMekka – Releasing high quality music, which doesn’t follow any trend in particular. Only tracks for everybody’s pleasure.
