Leonardo DiCaprio Talks About Meeting Luke Perry on Set
Even Hollywood legends get starstruck, and Leonardo DiCaprio is no exception. In the new documentary I Am Luke Perry, DiCaprio opens up about the unforgettable moment he met Luke Perry on the set of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and the lasting impression the late actor left on him.

In I Am Luke Perry, a documentary produced by Jason Priestley, friends, family, and co-stars remember Perry’s incredible career and kind-hearted nature. DiCaprio, 50, shares that meeting Perry on set was a surreal moment for him.
“I was immediately struck by his kindness,” DiCaprio said, recalling his time on the set of Quentin Tarantino’s Oscar-winning film. “There was an immediate sense of excitement in seeing Luke Perry on set. It was incredible.”
Luke Perry’s Role in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Perry played real-life actor Wayne Maunder in the movie, appearing in a recreation of Lancer’s pilot episode. DiCaprio, who portrayed the fictional Western actor Rick Dalton, shared the screen with Perry and reflected on how surreal it was to work alongside him.
“I remember being in my teens, and he was the manifestation of the new [James] Dean on television, and everyone was crazy about him,” DiCaprio said. “I felt this overwhelming feeling of being starstruck.”
DiCaprio and Perry’s Conversation on Set
Despite his initial nerves, DiCaprio and Perry ended up sharing a deep conversation about their careers, Los Angeles, and their journeys in Hollywood.
“We sat down and talked about where his career had gone, where my career had gone, where his life [had gone], my life [had gone].”
DiCaprio emphasized how much Perry’s humility and warmth stood out to him. “I was so struck by the kindness of his character. [He was] just an incredibly generous human being.”
Luke Perry’s Passing and DiCaprio’s Tribute
Tragically, Perry passed away in March 2019 at the age of 52 due to complications from a stroke, just four months before Once Upon a Time in Hollywood premiered.
On the red carpet that summer, DiCaprio reflected on Perry’s legacy. “I grew up with him on [Beverly Hills] 90210, looking up to him as literally the coolest dude on Earth. And honestly, when I was on set, I was starstruck.”
DiCaprio later paid tribute to Perry on social media, calling it an “honor” to have worked with him and expressing his deep sadness over the loss.
