While things seem to be coming back to normal in some parts of the world, there is news everyday that comes around to remind us the pandemic is far from over.
While most news coming in the past two months seemed positive, it looks like one of the largest music festivals in the world, Tomorrowland, will no longer be able to host its 2021 edition due to the permit for the event being denied.
In an announcement which came from the organizers earlier today, after being given the go ahead for a 75,000-person gathering earlier this month, they called this recent news today a “giant disaster.”
In a statement given to Dutch newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws, Tomorrowland Organizers said,
“Giant disaster! As Tomorrowland, we want to organize a safe festival first and foremost and we have stated several times that we will always continue to evaluate and anticipate the epidemiological situation. The mayor of Boom and his counsel have indicated to us that we can go to the Council of State against this decision.”
They went on to say, “After fifteen years of intensive cooperation, this feels very wry and we find it very unfortunate after the many constructive preparations and conversations, federal commitments have reached this point, where we no longer know what just happened to us and have to let it go for a while”
As reported by Dancing Astronaut, the mayors of Boom and Rumst held a joint press conference wherein they described the reasoning behind the ban this year as being too great a public health and safety risk, citing police preparedness, and more specifically, the lack of a ministerial decree officially allowing such large-scale events to take place. They also stated that only events with up to 400 people would be possible at this time.
While there still hasn’t been an official announcement regarding the cancellation from Tomorrowland, at this point it now seems almost inevitable.
