Carola Interview

Aditya – Hey Carola! Glad to have you for the interview. How’s 2021 been for you so far?

Carola – This is the best year in my career so far. Although we’ve been facing this whole situation regarding the pandemic, I have achieved so many things, such as getting gigs in the biggest venues in Brazil, like Privilege and Laroc; releasing music through great record labels, such as STMPD Records, Atlantic and now having a series of releases with Armada Music. Overall, I feel very fulfilled.

Aditya – Your latest track ‘Come With me’ debuts on one of most prolific record labels in the globe, how do you feel about releasing on Armada Music?

Carola – It is definitely a dream coming true. I truly admire Armada’s work throughout the years and many of the biggest artists whom I admire have already released though Armada. I couldn’t feel more proud to be part of this incredible catalog.

Aditya – How do you begin producing music? What’s your creative process like?

Carola – I always start finding the notes on the piano and then I try to find a vocal that fits these first notes. Or if the vocal comes with a great melody, I do the reversed process, which is trying to find the piano notes based on the vocals. Actually, I really love working with vocals: just a few of my compositions have no vocals on the break. I also like to do an extensive research to find a great variety of samples and tones that can bring together all the elements of the track.

Aditya – How long have you been producing music, and how did you begin?

Carola – I started DJing in 2012 and three years later, I saw myself in the studio learning music production. On the beginning, I used to watch many tutorials on Youtube and had a lot of help from my friends who were already producing electronic music. It took me three years studying before I felt that I was ready to release my first original track. I think I am better at it now than I was back in the old days, although I am still learning more and more everyday.

Aditya – You’ve a ginormous list of releases, which is your favorite and why?’

Carola – I love all my tracks, but my favorite ones are Falling For You, The Beat Drops and Come With Me.

Aditya – You’ve been supported by industry giants such as Martin Garrix, Sofi Tukker, David Guetta, Don Diablo, Alok, and more. How do you feel about acquiring support from these?

Carola – During my teenage years I used to spend so many hours listening to their music, so my music being part of their record labels feels very special. Not only that, but also to receive their support, seeing my music being played by all of these names feels magical!

Aditya – What’s your studio setup like? The gears you use to produce and DJ?

Carola – Actually, it is very simple. I have a notebook Predator, an audio card model Scarlett 2i2 gen and a headphones from Audio Technica, model ATH-M40x (I currently don’t use monitors, because I live at an apartment which doesn’t have the appropriate acoustic seal). I also use FL Studio and my favorite VSTs are Sylenth and Serum. The VSTs that are always on my list are Fabfilter, Fresh Air, LFOtool and Endless Smile.

Aditya – Being a DJ, what techniques do you use to keep the audience engaged

Carola – During my shows, I prefer mixing different styles, which, in my opinion, make the set more interesting. I love playing my original tracks, but I also play tracks from other music producers that I admire. Before being a DJ and a music producer, I was already a fan of e-music, so the question I always ask to myself is: would dance to this song? If the reply is yes, then the song will be part of my show.

Aditya – There’s a clear imbalance of women in the music industry, how do you see yourself supporting & encouraging more women to join the industry?

Carola – Sometimes, It feels unbelievable to me when I realize where I am getting! But do I have mixed feelings about it, as I’d love to see more female music producers in the industry conquering their spaces. I think have a long road ahead until we reach the balance we female musicians desire and I feel that I have a big responsibility in using my voice to encourage my sisters. I am always open to advise the girls that come up to me, it does not matter if it is regarding music production or emotional challenges that they are also facing in their journey. I will be always here to share my experiences, because I am certain we are going to achieve everything we want to.

Aditya – Lastly, what are your Sundays like?

Carola – These days, I’ve been spending my Sundays sleeping a lot after all the intense gigs that usually happen on the night before LOL
