Sony has released the first trailer for “Anaconda,” a new, edgy retelling of the cult hit 1997 snake horror movie.
The remake, with Jack Black and Paul Rudd, puts a fresh twist on things by mixing comedy, nostalgia, and frights into one holiday feature.
It is directed by Tom Gormican, who is known best for directing “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” and co-writing “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F.” He wrote and directed the film, which, though sharing a title with the Jennifer Lopez classic, is not a remake. Rather, it’s about a group of friends who, experiencing midlife crises, set out to remake their favorite film from their younger years.
Jack Black plays Doug, a wedding videographer, and Paul Rudd plays Griff, who is an unsuccessful background actor, in this adventure that starts off as a passion project but turns into an actual nightmare once the crew ventures deep into the jungle. The rest of the cast for the movie includes Thandiwe Newton, Steve Zahn, Daniela Melchior, and others that provide both comedic and dramatic input into the story.
Rudd and Black last year enticed the project, announcing its Christmas Day 2025 release in a lighthearted promotional video posted on YouTube. Black was bubbling with excitement to announce, “We’re making a movie! Paul Rudd and Jack Black star in the ‘Anaconda.'” Rudd suggested what the tone of the film was going to be like by stating, “You want to get scared. You want to laugh. You want to celebrate with your friends.”. Maybe you’re alone, sad and don’t have nobody but just want to forget about that. It’s coming out on Christmas in 2025.”
Produced by Brad Fuller and Andrew Form under their Fully Formed Entertainment banner, the film promises both suspense and absurd fun. Kevin Etten co-wrote the screenplay alongside Gormican, ensuring a sharp comedic edge while still paying tribute to the original’s thriller roots.
Whereas the 1997 “Anaconda” was a pop culture phenomenon due to its A-list cast and extreme monster chaos, the remake seeks to forge its own niche. By mixing meta-humor with the perils of the jungle, Sony is hoping to provide an audience-pleasing experience that’s both new and familiar.
With its blend of comedy icons, outrageous premise, and holiday release timing, “Anaconda” has the potential to be one of the most buzzy movies of 2025. Old fans and newcomers alike will be waiting to see if this bold rethinking finds the perfect balance of frights and guffaws.
