Arnold Schwarzenegger is not one to whine about the downsides of fame.
At 77, the bodybuilding legend turned Hollywood icon has seen it all – and he’s more than happy to keep soaking in the spotlight. In a recent interview with The Sunday Times, Schwarzenegger shared his unfiltered thoughts on being famous, why he doesn’t mind being approached by fans, and how things have shifted now that his son Patrick is stepping into the limelight.
When asked about how he handles fame, Arnold didn’t hold back. “You’re absolutely right. What people miss the most is to get attention,” he said. “That someone knows them, is aware of them, that they’re somebody.” He pointed out that while many people pay therapists to be heard, he gets attention everywhere he goes – and actually gets paid for it.
“I go out anywhere to a crowd and they all listen. And they love to listen to my s***, right? I’m having fifty thousand shrinks sitting out there, and I don’t pay a f***ing penny. I get paid! So how can I complain about that?”
Sure, there are moments when fame interrupts his daily life, like getting asked for selfies during dinner. But Schwarzenegger brushes that off easily. “OK, yes, there are times when you go to a restaurant and someone comes up and says, can I take a picture of you? But I can walk into this restaurant at any time, I can sit at any table I want, I make no reservation. For that I take a picture with someone. It takes three minutes. So why would I complain?”
As a father of five, Schwarzenegger’s legacy extends beyond his film career. His son Patrick, 31, recently gained major recognition for his role as Saxon Ratliff in HBO’s The White Lotus. Arnold couldn’t be prouder.
“All of a sudden, everything has changed around,” he explained. “I walk into the gym now and it used to be the girls would come up and give me their contact. And then after White Lotus comes out, the girl comes up and says, ‘Here’s my contact, give it to Patrick.’”
Arnold says it’s all good, even if Patrick ends up overshadowing his own fame. “It’s wonderful. If I go to my grave and know that my son has outdone me, I’m in heaven.”
Arnold Schwarzenegger on fame isn’t your typical celebrity complaint-fest. Instead, it’s a refreshingly honest take from someone who knows exactly what he signed up for – and welcomes it with open arms. From bodybuilding stages to blockbuster films and now proud fatherhood, Arnie shows there’s real strength in humility.
