‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Trailer Unleashes the Dark Origins of Fire Na’vi in War Against Jake Sully

20th Century Studios has released the much-awaited trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third film in James Cameron’s blockbuster series of Avatar movies.

Set to release on December 19, the movie picks up where the story of Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and his family left off as they encounter a sinister new threat — the Fire Na’vi, a hostile tribe on Pandora with sinister and destructive roots

.

The trailer hints at a building war, with the Fire Na’vi fighting a fierce battle with Jake, Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), and the kids. The imagery suggests themes of survival, family ties, and the devastating force of fire, a contrast to the aquatic setting of the first film.

Returning and New Cast

In addition to Worthington and Saldaña, some old friends make a return: Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet, Bailey Bass, Britain Dalton, Trinity Bliss, Jack Champion, and Edie Falco. The follow-up introduces Oona Chaplin and David Thewlis, both of whom debut in the Avatar franchise in as-yet-undisclosed but critical roles.

Box Office Legacy

The Avatar film series holds a record-breaking history at the box office. The first film, released in 2009, became the highest-grossing movie of all time, with worldwide earnings exceeding $2.9 billion – a record it still holds. Its sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water (2022), grossed $2.3 billion, surpassing Cameron’s Titanic to claim the third spot on the all-time list. The only film between the two Avatar titles is Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame (2019), which earned $2.7 billion.

James Cameron’s Vision

Other than documentaries, the Avatar movies are Cameron’s only directorial ventures of the 21st century. He started working on the franchise in the 1990s, but innovative technology in motion capture and CGI had to be developed to make Pandora a reality. That vision became possible due to Weta Workshop, whose revolutionary effects continue to revolutionize filmmaking.

Sequels

Cameron’s legendary saga is just getting underway. Avatar 4 will be out in 2029, and Avatar 5 in 2031, so the fans will keep coming back to Pandora for decades to come.

With its more somber tone and emphasis on the Fire Na’vi back story, Avatar: Fire and Ash promises to build on the mythology of Pandora and up the ante for Jake Sully and his family in ways audiences have never experienced before.
