Avril Lavigne and her ex-husband Deryck Whibley proved there’s no bad blood between them as they took the stage together at the Vans Warped Tour on Sunday night, June 15, 2025.
Performing in front of thousands at RFK Stadium Grounds in Washington, the duo delivered a surprise rendition of Sum 41’s classic hit In Too Deep, sparking massive crowd energy and online buzz.
Lavigne, 40, and Whibley, 45, were married in 2006 but called it quits in 2009. Their divorce was finalized in 2010, but clearly, the two musicians have managed to maintain a solid friendship through the years. On Instagram, Avril shared moments from the show and gave her ex a major shoutout, calling him a “legend” and praising the atmosphere.
“Headlined @vanswarpedtour last night and it was everything I would have expected and more! It was one of the best crowds and you guys know how to rock,” she wrote. “Also this legend @deryckwhibley from @sum41 joined me for one of the best pop punk anthems of all time ‘In Too Deep.’”
The performance was a full-circle moment for fans who grew up on early 2000s punk-pop. Seeing Avril Lavigne and Deryck Whibley reunite onstage for a nostalgic anthem reminded everyone of the golden days of the genre, and their once-power-couple status in the scene.
Deryck is now married to model Ariana Cooper, while Avril has had a few public relationships since her split from Whibley. She tied the knot with Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger in 2013, but that marriage ended in 2015. Most recently, she was engaged to artist Mod Sun in 2022, but the two went their separate ways less than a year later.
In a 2022 interview with FAULT Magazine, Avril opened up about the challenges of love and why she’s learned to focus on herself. “Yes, love is hard and relationships are not easy. It’s not easy for anybody, and I’ve now lived long enough to realize that I need to prioritize myself and take care of myself,” she said. “I went through a phase where I was like, ‘I’m gonna be independent and have time on my own for a minute…’ And it really didn’t last that long! But when I started the album, I was definitely in the mindset of, ‘If I’m going to rely on anyone in this world, it’s going to be me.’”
Still, despite her relationship ups and downs, Lavigne’s connection with Whibley has remained steady, and their onstage chemistry proves it. The Avril Lavigne and Deryck Whibley reunion was a standout moment in a career full of hits, and fans are hoping it won’t be the last time they see the former couple rock out together.
