Bella Ramsey in denial about fame? Yup, that’s exactly what the 21-year-old The Last of Us star claims, even as their popularity skyrockets. Despite fronting one of TV’s biggest shows and having their face everywhere, Bella says they still take the London Underground, wear joggers and ripped T-shirts, and live like nothing has changed.
In a new chat with The Guardian, Bella opened up about how surreal fame feels. “With the release of season two [of The Last of Us], I’ve realised there’s a lot that’s out of my control, but a lot that isn’t too,” they shared. Still, Bella’s approach is refreshingly grounded: “I go out in my joggers. I go out in my ripped T-shirt that needs a wash. I’m sort of in denial about it. Or can’t comprehend it so just carry on as if nothing’s happened.”
They’re not buying into the celebrity hype either. Bella believes fame is temporary, saying, “You reach that level of fame for a few months, then people move on to the next thing, the next show.” Even with season two on the way, they’re already bracing for the short wave of attention. “It’ll hype back up… then it’ll die down again,” Bella said. “Which is a really, really big relief.”
Before they became the face of The Last of Us, Bella had already racked up some impressive credits with roles in Game of Thrones and Catherine Called Birdy. But that early start came with a cost. “There is now an element of me looking back and being like: ‘Oh, I was never a teenager.’ I do feel like I went from kid to adult,” they explained. Being a child actor meant being on set constantly and missing the normal growing-up stuff most teens go through.
Now that they’re settled in London, things have started to feel more balanced. Bella finally has a close-knit group of friends their own age, something that didn’t happen earlier in their career. “That’s been a really, really positive thing,” they said.
So yeah, Bella Ramsey in denial about fame might sound odd, but it’s honestly pretty relatable. They’re just trying to live a normal life while the world watches.
