Blake Lively returned to the limelight this week when she made her first public appearance in three months.
The former Gossip Girl actress was seen at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York City on Sept. 5, attending a panel discussion organized by Glossy on the beauty business.
For the occasional outing, the 38-year-old actress made heads turn in an eye-catching fashion choice. She wore a sheer top under a brown blazer, a pleated skirt of matching hue, and knee-high boots with brass buckles, suavely mixing class with toughness.
Blake wasn’t the only one returning to the spotlight. She posted on Instagram that she was moved to have backing from Megababe founder Katie Sturino, who remained after her own panel to root for Blake. Re-sharing a photo of the moment, Blake wrote, “This is what girls lifting each other up looks like. I love and appreciate you, @katiesturino, as a founder, as a woman, as a friend.”
Although her husband Ryan Reynolds was not there, Blake also took to social media to express her support for him as he flew to the Toronto International Film Festival. Ryan was present for the premiere of John Candy: I Like Me, a documentary he had produced about the late comedy icon.
My husband’s passion for John Candy is contagious,” Blake wrote. “He gives him honor with his words, in his profession, and now in this stunning film. A tale full of heart, soul, loss, laughter, friendship, family, art, work, pain and joy.”
Ryan, who has spoken in the past about his own battles with anxiety, told the festival how getting involved with the project helped him better understand Candy’s own personal struggles. Talking with E! News, he stated, “I had no idea that he had this kind of spiritual foundation to him. I did not know that he resided at this place of intersection of being a people pleaser, yet also beginning to sort of tackle mental health, which no one discussed at that time.”
He further added that the project resonated with his own experiences. “If you’re a people pleaser and you have mental health problems, it’s a horrible combination. You don’t want to burden anyone, but the only way you get through it is if you talk about it. They’re in conflict with each other.”
Blake’s re-emergence into the limelight and Ryan’s touching memorial to John Candy created a week of strong public moments for the couple, both professionally and personally.
