Damson Idris Breaks Silence on Black Panther Casting Rumors

Damson Idris has finally broken his silence on whether he’s been tapped to play the new Black Panther.

While promoting his work on the Today show, the 33-year-old F1 actor and Snowfall star was directly asked if he’d spoken to Marvel about stepping into the iconic superhero role. Idris gave a playful response: “Yes, no!”, keeping fans firmly in the dark.

When asked if he would accept the role if offered, Idris was a bit more direct: “Yes!” It’s not a confirmation, but it’s not a denial either. The rumor mill has been churning ever since the passing of Chadwick Boseman in 2020, who brought T’Challa to life in multiple MCU films, beginning with Captain America: Civil War and most notably in Black Panther (2018).

After Boseman’s tragic passing from colon cancer at just 43, Marvel shifted the mantle of Black Panther to Shuri, played by Letitia Wright, in Wakanda Forever (2022). That move left fans wondering if Marvel would eventually recast T’Challa or take the franchise in a new direction. With Ryan Coogler returning to direct the third installment, speculation around who might wear the suit next has reached new heights.

Adding more fuel to the fire is another massive casting reveal: Denzel Washington. In a podcast appearance, Coogler confirmed he’s writing an entirely new character just for the acting legend. This character hasn’t appeared in any Marvel comics before, making Washington’s role a completely original addition to the MCU.

Coogler has been vocal about his admiration for Washington, calling him a “living legend” and “a great mentor.” The director has also made it clear he’s been wanting to work with the Gladiator II star for years. Now, it’s finally happening.

Washington himself let it slip during an interview with Australia’s Today show. While discussing what’s left on his bucket list before retiring, he mentioned several upcoming roles, including Hannibal, Othello, and a part in the next Black Panther film. According to Washington, the script is being tailored just for him.

Though no official release date has been confirmed, Coogler teased that fans “won’t have long” to wait.

The buzz around Black Panther 3 is building fast, especially with both Damson Idris and Denzel Washington in the conversation. Whether Idris will truly become the next T’Challa or take on a new character remains to be seen. But one thing’s clear: Marvel isn’t done with Wakanda yet.
