David Corenswet Opens Up on Intense Superman Test and Huge Career Turn

David Corenswet is stepping into the iconic red cape as Superman, but his journey to landing the role wasn’t just about donning the suit, it was deeply personal and emotional.

The 31-year-old actor recently shared how intense the screen-testing process was, especially since it came right after he learned his wife, Julia, was pregnant with their first child.

“She told me that she was pregnant two days after I found out I was going to screen test for Superman,” David told People. The timing was wild, two massive life changes at once, and both completely hush-hush. “For the first several months of her pregnancy, as is sort of protocol, we weren’t telling anybody. We had these two quite huge secrets that we just had between the two of us. And that was intense.”

Corenswet described those early months as emotionally heavy but bonding. “For a period we had just each other for these two huge things. It wasn’t direct, but it was still very close… just having to do two big unknown things at the same time. And they were both great things.”

The actor had no idea what would come first, his big break or fatherhood being real. But when the call came from director James Gunn, things got very real, very fast. David recalled thinking the call might be a prank. “It started with, ‘Hey David, it’s James Gunn.’ And I said, ‘Can you prove that?’”

He explained that seeing an unknown number from a Los Angeles area code raised suspicions. “I thought, ‘I’m pretty sure this is James telling me whether or not I got the part, but it could be anybody… maybe somebody’s going to play a prank on me.’” Turns out, it was the real deal. “He said, ‘That’s a good point. I’m calling to offer you the role of Superman.’ And I said, ‘Well, you’re the only person who could do that, so it must be you.’”

Taking over the role of Superman is no small thing. Legends like Christopher Reeve and Henry Cavill have worn the cape, and David knows the pressure is real. “I feel much more a sense of responsibility than a sense of accomplishment,” he admitted. “So much in life, and especially in an actor’s life, is up to chance and good luck. I just think of it as a great stroke of luck, and I better do everything I can to earn the responsibility.”

As Superman: Legacy gears up for its 2025 release, fans are eager to see how David Corenswet will bring the Man of Steel to life. If his passion and honesty are any sign, the cape is in good hands.
