Incredibles 3 Director Peter Sohn Shares Emotional Reaction to New Role

Peter Sohn is stepping into the director’s chair for The Incredibles 3, and he’s calling it “a dream come true.”

Known for his work on Pixar’s 2023 hit Elemental, Sohn now leads the next chapter in one of the studio’s most beloved franchises. The announcement came at Disney’s D23 Expo in late summer 2024, creating a buzz across the animation world.

At 47, Sohn has spent over two decades at Pixar, contributing to hits like Finding Nemo, Up, Wall-E, and both previous Incredibles films. This new role marks a major moment in his career, and he’s not hiding his excitement. Speaking to Variety, he said, “I’ve always loved this family and what they represent-the messy, funny, heroic chaos of everyday life. To help tell their next chapter is a true honour.”

This third installment is the first Incredibles movie not directed by Brad Bird, the visionary behind the 2004 original and the 2018 sequel. Now 66, Bird remains involved as a producer and co-writer, even as he focuses on other projects like the sci-fi film Ray Gunn and the historical drama 1906.

Sohn isn’t exactly a newcomer to the world of Bob and Helen Parr-aka Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl. He worked behind the scenes on the earlier movies and credits Bird as a major influence. “Brad has been such a mentor to me,” Sohn said. “Working with him on the first two films shaped my whole approach to storytelling. To now be collaborating with him again, but in this new way, is both surreal and incredibly exciting.”

Plot details for The Incredibles 3 are still under wraps, and there’s no official release date yet. The voice cast is also unconfirmed, though fans hope for the return of Craig T. Nelson, Holly Hunter, and Samuel L. Jackson – who voiced the core characters in the first two films.

The original Incredibles grossed $630 million globally, and Incredibles 2 soared past $1.24 billion, making it one of Pixar’s most successful movies. Those numbers set a high bar, but if Sohn’s track record is anything to go by-especially after Elemental quietly brought in nearly $500 million-the franchise seems to be in good hands.

Disney and Pixar are expected to reveal more about the film later in 2025. Until then, fans can only wait and speculate about what’s next for the super-powered Parr family. But with Peter Sohn directing and Brad Bird still on board, The Incredibles 3 promises to stay true to its roots while offering something fresh for a new generation.
