Mark Duplass has never shied away from discussing his mental health, and he’s once again opening up about the daily work it takes to manage his depression and anxiety.
In a recent interview with PageSix, The Morning Show star, 48, described his system as “complicated” but essential for staying balanced.
“It’s a really complicated system of making sure you get enough sleep, making sure you get exercise every day, making sure I’m being really careful about the medication I take, never to miss it,” he explained. “My medication is a very fundamental critical part of my system.”
He describes his mental health as a “delicate balance and ecosystem” that requires constant attention. “I feel like I gotta make sure I keep showing up and working and it’s exhausting sometimes, but what choice do I have?”
This isn’t the first time Duplass has been transparent about his struggles. Back in 2023, he posted a red carpet photo on social media, explaining how he could see “fear and sadness” behind his smile, even during what appeared to be happy moments. He shared how depression isn’t always dramatic. Sometimes it’s a subtle feeling that something’s off. Other times, it’s a full-on breakdown.
“I have been struggling with anxiety and depression for most of my life,” he wrote. “Sometimes it comes barging through my front door and pins me to the ground for an unknown and seemingly insurmountable amount of time.”
Despite years of therapy, a strong support system, medication, and healthy habits, he admits it’s still a fight. He wanted others to know they’re not alone. “There is help. This will pass,” he said in the same post.
More recently, Duplass shared a positive update. “I’ve been feeling stronger lately. A little lighter, more inspired, more energy,” he posted. “Overall, just ‘happier’.”
For those who’ve dealt with depression, he said that feeling is like seeing the fog finally lift. “You think: ‘Oh, right, THIS is what it’s like. I forgot.’ Because I do forget.”
He emphasized that managing mental health can become so routine, exercise, medication, therapy, journaling, meditation, proper diet and sleep, that you forget how much effort goes into just staying stable.
“It can be exhausting and you don’t even realize how hard you’re working just to stay vertical,” he said.
Still, Duplass ended his message with hope. “I hope you’re all finding silver linings. The small things. That morning coffee. The pet snuggles. A favorite song in your headphones at the grocery. A walk right before sunset.”
And to anyone still struggling, he had this to say: “I hope you can feel the big, tidal wave of hope I’m sending your way.”
