James Gunn Confirms New Wonder Woman Is Coming

A new Wonder Woman movie is officially in the works, according to James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios.

Although the project is still in its early stages, Gunn confirmed that development is underway and that the script is currently being written. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the director described the process as “slow moving, but it’s moving.”

Fans have been eagerly waiting for updates since the previous plans for a third Gal Gadot-led Wonder Woman movie were scrapped. With James Gunn and Peter Safran taking over the DC Studios leadership in 2022, a full creative reset has been in progress. Gunn emphasized that Wonder Woman remains one of the core characters of the DC Universe, alongside Superman, Batman, and Supergirl.

At this point, no casting decisions have been announced for the new Wonder Woman movie. While Gal Gadot made a strong mark as Diana Prince in earlier DC films like Batman v Superman, Wonder Woman, Justice League, and Wonder Woman 1984, her return appears unlikely under the current direction.

Gunn stressed the importance of DC’s “big four” characters. “I wouldn’t say only those four characters, but I would say that those four characters are incredibly important to us,” he said. He mentioned being confident about the direction of two of those heroes, and still “dealing with the other two,” suggesting ongoing work with both Wonder Woman and possibly Batman.

This update comes as Gunn prepares to release the highly anticipated Superman film, starring David Corenswet. Gunn wrote and directed the movie himself and is confident it will resonate with audiences. “People are looking for heroes right now,” he said at a DC press event. “They are looking for people who are good and decent human beings. And Superman is that.”

Warner Bros. Discovery is going all in on promoting Superman this summer. According to Gunn, CEO David Zaslav is fully behind the campaign. “You’ve seen what can happen when Warner Bros. Discovery gets together behind a Barbie or a Wonka. And that’s how it’s being treated for Superman,” Gunn explained.

Looking ahead, James Gunn and Peter Safran are focused on building a strong, connected DC Universe. Gunn says the mission is simple: “We don’t want these characters to die out. We want to bring new stories and new life, we want to introduce these characters to new generations. And I think we are doing that, slowly but surely.”

For now, fans can rest easy knowing a new Wonder Woman movie is on the horizon, even if it’s still a while away from hitting theaters.
