James Gunn is making it clear: his job at DC Studios is all about creativity.
Since becoming co-chairman and co-CEO of the studio in 2022 alongside longtime producing partner Peter Safran, Gunn has taken full control of the creative side of the DC Universe.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn explained that his responsibilities aren’t split between creative and business. Instead, he focuses entirely on creative storytelling, both on a micro and macro level. “The balance isn’t between creative and business,” he said. “The balance is between specific creative and macro creative.”
While Safran handles the meetings and business decisions, Gunn is all-in on writing, directing, and guiding the broader DCU creative vision. “For me, it’s about writing and directing, but it’s also about shepherding other writers and directors,” he explained. “My job is all creative.”
That includes coming up with ideas for new shows and movies, which he then hands off to other creators. Gunn admits there are always a few non-creative responsibilities that come with his position, but he stays rooted in storytelling across all DC platforms.
Still, even Gunn knows there are limits. “I can’t do everything,” he said. “It’s a little bit too much at times. I’ve had to try to focus on what I can focus on… If I try to do everything, it’s too little of any one thing.”
Gunn is currently writing and directing Superman, the first film in DC’s rebooted cinematic universe. It’s a major test of his leadership at the studio. “Superman is one of the three biggest characters at DC… the figurehead of DC in a lot of ways because he’s the first ever superhero,” Gunn said. “So it seemed like the right movie to do first.”
The film, starring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, represents more than just another superhero flick. It’s the tone-setter for the new DCU. Gunn believes Superman’s core values are what people want to see right now.
“I think he’s the right Superman because he is a character that stands for something solid… protecting others and being good to people,” Gunn told The Hollywood Reporter. “People are looking for heroes right now. They are looking for values of goodness.”
With Superman leading the charge, Gunn is hoping to win back audiences with a more honest, values-driven approach. His creative-first role gives him the power to shape that vision from the ground up.
James Gunn’s DC Studios role is no small task, but if he can deliver with Superman, it might just redefine what superhero movies look like in the coming years.
