Newly released police body-cam footage has emerged from Jay Cutler’s 2024 DUI arrest, which captures the former NFL quarterback refusing to submit to a field sobriety test shortly before being handcuffed by authorities.
The Franklin Police Department posted the video on October 17, 2024, showing the tense encounter that happened after Cutler had rear-ended another car while under the influence of alcohol. The exchange between Cutler, 42, the responding officer, and the other driver involved in the accident was filmed in the video.
When asked, Cutler first lied and said he hadn’t drunk alcohol, answering “none” to the question of how much he’d had that day. Eventually, on further interrogation, he was forced to admit to having “a little bit.” The officer then asked Cutler if he would be willing to undergo a sobriety test to find out whether or not he was a fit driver. Cutler refused, answering, “No,” which led officers to arrest him on the spot.
Police found later a loaded pistol and a rifle in Cutler’s car. Consequently, his charges were driving while intoxicated, illegal possession of a weapon under the influence, implied consent violation, and failure to use reasonable care to prevent a collision.
Cutler stood before a Williamson County court on August 26, 2024, where he pleaded guilty to the charge of DUI. The charge of weapons was dropped in return for his surrender of the pistol. He received four days in jail, a $350 fine, and a DUI safety class. His Tennessee driver’s license was suspended, and he was put on one year of unsupervised probation.
In spite of the four-day sentence, Cutler spent only two and a half days in jail before he was released towards the end of September 2024.
The other motorist who was involved in the accident has also sued the ex-Chicago Bears quarterback. The civil lawsuit, brought by attorney Sydney Pierce, charges Cutler with being “at fault” for the accident and “negligent in failing to exercise reasonable and due care in operating the vehicle.” The suit charges that Cutler’s intoxication was the direct cause of the wreck and that the victim incurred lost wages, impaired earning capacity, and other out-of-pocket costs. The plaintiff is requesting unspecified compensatory damages.
After his arrest, Cutler’s ex-wife, TV star Kristin Cavallari, spoke about the situation on her podcast. Cavallari, 38, who was married to Cutler for seven years before their divorce in 2020, said she is concerned for her former husband.

The body-camera video reignited the public debate around Cutler’s legal issues and personal demons after his retirement from the NFL. Formerly remembered for his powerful arm and tough face on the field, the ex-Chicago Bears and Denver Broncos quarterback has been making headlines in recent years for his off-field antics.
Cutler’s most recent episode is another example in a line of post-professional problems that have maintained him in the news for reasons completely apart from football. Although the former player has not made a public comment about the release of the footage, the video already has widespread online notoriety and criticism.
With his DUI and probation safety program still underway, it is anyone’s guess if Cutler will make any public statements about the accident or recovery plans.
