Jeffrey Dean Morgan Can’t Watch His ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Death Scene
Jeffrey Dean Morgan recently admitted that he still can’t bring himself to watch his emotional death scene in Grey’s Anatomy. As the show celebrates its 20th anniversary, the actor reflected on playing fan-favorite Denny Duquette, a character whose tragic fate left a lasting impact on both viewers and himself.
During a conversation with his former co-star Katherine Heigl, Morgan revealed that the emotional weight of his character’s death still affects him. “It makes me cry,” he told People. “One, because it was so awesome, and two, it was f****** incredibly sad to watch.”

He admitted that when he watches the scene, he doesn’t see himself – just the character. “I don’t see myself in there, which I take as a good sign,” he said. “If I can watch myself acting and not see myself, that’s pretty special.”
His former co-star Heigl shared that filming the scene was incredibly difficult. “I was sitting alone a lot, listening to really sad music, thinking about my dead brother,” she admitted, explaining how she channeled personal grief into the performance.
Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes has a reputation for writing devastatingly beautiful love stories, and the doomed romance between Denny and Izzie was no exception. “One of my favorite things about Shonda as a writer is how beautifully she does these tortured love stories,” Heigl said. “It was doomed from the start.” She also revealed that actors are often kept in the dark about major plot twists. “It wasn’t like I had some big lead-up to, ‘This is coming for Izzie.’ It’s always secretive there, and they don’t want to spill the beans too soon.”
