Jennifer Lopez made waves again at the New York City premiere of her latest film Kiss of the Spider Woman on October 6, highlighting her sense of dramatic red carpet style.
The 56-year-old international superstar dazzled in a sculptural brown and taupe Harris Reed-designed gown with an elaborate spider-like bodice that beautifully referenced the title of the film. The look, from Reed’s Spring 2026 ready-to-wear collection, reflected the designer’s affection for individuality and dramatic flair. Reed characterized the collection as one emphasizing characters that “perform for you,” with influences from figures such as David Bowie and Mick Jagger as well as Victorian and English heritage style.
Lopez’s stylist, Rob Zangardi, assembled the look to embody method dressing – dress in theme with her film’s spirit. The singer-actress paired her dramatic gown with a sleek updo that let the intricate bodice take center stage, complemented by understated jewelry by Hassanzadeh. Her dramatic fashion moment was not just about capturing her on-screen persona but also about cementing her status as a style icon.
The movie Kiss of the Spider Woman is a reworking of Argentine novelist Manuel Puig’s 1976 novel. It is the tale of Valentín, a political inmate, and Molina, an inmate who has been convicted of public indecency, who are in a shared cell. Valentín bonds with Molina when Molina narrates a Hollywood musical featuring Ingrid Luna. The two men have an unconventional friendship that delves into subject matter such as love, freedom, and identity. The newest adaptation, which had its earlier premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, is based both on the original Broadway musical by John Kander, Fred Ebb, and Terrence McNally and on the 1985 Oscar-winning film version starring William Hurt, Raul Julia, and Sônia Braga.
In a red carpet surprise, Lopez also met up with her ex-husband Ben Affleck, who executive produced the film in partnership with his and Matt Damon’s studio, Artist Equity. The pair were snapped laughing and hugging each other happily as they posed together for pictures, one of the first times they had been spotted together since they broke up. At the event, Lopez even paused to thank Affleck, stating, “Thank you, Ben, this movie wouldn’t have been made without Ben.”
The emotional chemistry between the ex-couple lent the premiere a throwback quality. Lopez was passionate about the project, discussing how moved she was by the script: “I read the script in bed and I was just floored. I was like, could this be happening right now? I get to sing, I get to dance, I get to act – I get to be an old-time Hollywood movie star.”
Lopez and Affleck’s relationship has been a long-time interest for their fans. The two were initially engaged between 2002 and 2004 and later got back together in 2021. They got married in Las Vegas in 2022 before having an intimate celebration in Georgia that same year. Lopez, however, sought divorce in August 2024 and closed it by January 2025.
Affleck spoke about the breakup in a March interview with GQ, reaffirming that there was “no scandal, no soap opera” involved in their break-up. “It’s just a story about people trying to work out their lives and relationships in ways that we all usually do,” he said, taking a realistic approach to their celebrity split.
Even with their on-again, off-again romantic history, the couple’s working relationship in Kiss of the Spider Woman demonstrated mutual respect and creative rapport. As Lopez remains a force to be reckoned with on screen and on the runway, her recent premiere ensemble is a testament to the fact that very few can hold court on a red carpet like J.Lo.
