From Co-Stars to Cold Vibes? Jodie Sweetin Talks Candace Cameron Fallout

Jodie Sweetin has recently opened up about her relationship with her former Full House co-star, Candace Cameron Bure, and it’s clear that while their bond isn’t what it once was, there’s no hate between them. In fact, Jodie confirmed that even though she wouldn’t rush to “hug” Candace if they saw each other, she certainly doesn’t hold animosity toward her.

The actress, now 43, explained their dynamic on The Vault podcast, touching on the differences that have grown between them over the years, especially when it comes to their differing views on politics and social issues. One of the most notable divides came after Candace’s controversial comments in 2022, when she vowed to keep “traditional marriage at the core” of the programming at Great American Family. This stance caused a lot of drama, particularly when it came to LGBTQ+ rights, and it drew a line between the two actresses who once shared a TV family bond.

“We’ve always been very different on those things,” Jodie explained. “Candace and I, we just live very different lifestyles.” Despite their differences, she emphasized that their long history made it feel more like a family situation, one where they don’t need to agree on everything, but mutual respect remains intact. She compared their relationship to that of extended family members, where certain conversations, like politics, are best avoided to keep the peace.

“You know, it’s like family members where you’re like, maybe we don’t talk all the time, and I know if politics come up, it’s not going to go well, but I don’t hate you. I am not going to not hug you,” Jodie added. The message was clear: while they may not see eye to eye on everything, there’s no deep-seated resentment on her part.

This all comes on the heels of Candace’s public criticism of the Paris Olympics opening ceremony, which she called “disgusting,” claiming it “blasphemed” the Christian faith. This sparked more controversy, and Jodie couldn’t resist sharing a post on Instagram explaining the artistic interpretation of the scene in question, which was based on the Greek god Dionysus, not the Christian Last Supper as Candace had suggested.

But Jodie Sweetin made it clear that her Instagram post wasn’t a direct jab at Candace Cameron. “To be honest, I wasn’t even speaking about her,” Jodie clarified. “There was already something that had happened where we went very divergent paths on something we said, and then I saw the Olympics thing and saw all these people freaking out about it. And I was like, ‘Oh my God, tell me you know nothing about art history without telling me you know nothing.’” The actress was quick to point out that her post was more of a general commentary on the lack of understanding about art history rather than a deliberate swipe at her former co-star.

In terms of social media drama, Candace took the step of unfollowing Jodie on Instagram three years ago, but Jodie has no intentions of reciprocating. “I’m not going to unfollow anybody,” she said. “I don’t live my life based on social media. I think it can be used for some great things, and I also think it can be really negative and full of a lot of s***, particularly these days.”

It’s clear that while Jodie and Candace may not be as close as they once were, there’s no outright animosity between them. They’ve just grown apart over time, as people often do. Both actresses have gone their separate ways, but despite their differences, the respect and history they share from their time on Full House remain. While fans may hope for a reunion or for old tensions to dissipate, Jodie has made it clear that while she’s not eager to embrace Candace with a hug anytime soon, she also doesn’t harbor any hard feelings.
