Turns out Jon Hamm is a method guy, even when it comes to being bitten.
In Apple TV+’s new drama Your Friends and Neighbors, Hamm plays a rich guy mid-divorce who ends up in a no-strings mess with Olivia Munn’s character. And when the script called for a little teeth-on-skin action? He didn’t flinch. He told Olivia to go for it. Hard.
“My character had to bite him,” Olivia said in an interview with PEOPLE, “and I was nervous, but he just kept saying, ‘It’s okay. You can bite really hard.’” So… she did. And apparently, Hamm is “a very tough guy.”
The scene isn’t just spicy for the sake of it, according to Olivia, it’s a major emotional anchor. Her character Sam is looking for something deeper from Hamm’s character Coop. And since he’s not exactly opening up emotionally, she’s clinging to what they do have: physical connection.
“There’s a lot of sex scenes,” she said. “We had so many conversations with Jon, the showrunner Jonathan Tropper, and the intimacy coordinator to make it feel real.” Translation: steamy, but with soul.
The whole thing was heavily choreographed, more like a dance routine than a free-for-all. Olivia Munn compared the intimacy team to stunt coordinators, making sure it looked hot and honest without crossing lines.
“It’s not real life,” she said. “There’s a lot of choreography that goes on behind the scenes. But the goal is to make it feel as real as possible.”
So yeah, biting, sweating, awkward camera angles… all in a day’s work. And while the scene might come off as raw and unscripted on screen, it was anything but. That level of chaos takes serious prep.
Your Friends and Neighbors premieres April 11 on Apple TV+. Expect sharp dialogue, hotter-than-hot moments, and yes, a very calm, very professional Jon Hamm telling people to sink their teeth in.
