Keke Palmer is getting more real than ever on her new album Just Keke.
The 31-year-old entertainer, who’s been in the spotlight since childhood, says this project is different. It’s raw, emotional, and deeply personal, especially when it comes to the aftermath of her public split from fitness trainer Darius Jackson.
In a recent chat with Extra, Keke explained that growing up in the entertainment industry with Disney and Nickelodeon shaped how she presented herself. “It was really about setting the stage for what it means to be a product and a performer and a brand,” she said. But Just Keke flips that script.
She calls the album a “glitch”, a break from the polished version of herself that fans are used to. “I share a little bit more than I usually would … because of everything that’s happened in my life thus far,” she admitted.
One major topic on the album is her breakup with Jackson, which played out in the public eye in 2023. Keke doesn’t hold back about the emotional toll it took. She said music helped her finally confront feelings she had buried.
“The reliving it wasn’t difficult, but addressing the emotions in the carnage … that it left was,” she said. “I brushed it up in the corner and just let it sit. I thought I moved on … but when I got into the studio and actually had to look at the pile of trash in the corner, I realized how much grief it caused me and how heavy it was.”
Recording Just Keke became a kind of therapy. For Keke, it was about finally processing pain she had avoided for months. And that’s what makes this album hit so different. It’s not just catchy, it’s vulnerable.
This honesty isn’t limited to the breakup, though. Keke also reflects on her early years in the industry. On her Baby, This Is Keke Palmer podcast, she’s been open about the isolation she felt as a young star.
“No one could relate to me, not my siblings, not even my parents,” she said. “Anytime a dynamic is shifted like that it can get highly toxic, because no one knows how to deal with the trauma of being a celebrity, or having a celebrity child.”
Despite the challenges, Keke is owning her story now. With Just Keke, she’s turning pain into power, and letting fans in like never before. Whether it’s heartbreak, fame, or healing, this album lays it all out.
