He’s not done yet. Keanu Reeves is officially coming back as John Wick in installment 5 of the action-packed franchise.
Lionsgate made the announcement at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, confirming Reeves will once again play the now-iconic nunchuck-wielding assassin. After four movies and nearly a decade of action, “John Wick 5” is happening, and it’s just one part of a major franchise expansion.
The studio also revealed a few more surprises: a standalone film centered around Donnie Yen’s character, Caine, and an animated prequel. Both are currently in development alongside “Ballerina”, the long-awaited spinoff starring Ana de Armas, which hits theaters on June 6.
Keanu, 59, will appear briefly in “Ballerina” before fully stepping back into the lead role for “John Wick 5”. He’ll reunite with director Chad Stahelski and producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, the team behind the first four explosive chapters.
“Ballerina” got a first-look preview at CinemaCon, where Ana de Armas introduced an extended clip. Her character, Eve Macarro, is a ballerina-turned-assassin, and the footage shows her fighting her way through a dimly lit bar, shooting one guy and smashing a plate over another. She told the audience the role was far more intense than her brief action turn in “No Time to Die”: “This is by far the most physical and challenging thing I’ve ever done.”
As for “John Wick 5”, there’s no word yet on the release date or supporting cast. But Lionsgate execs made it clear they wouldn’t greenlight another sequel unless the story delivered. “Keanu, Chad, Basil and Erica would not return unless they had something truly phenomenal and fresh to say with these characters and this world,” said Adam Fogelson, chair of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group.
The “John Wick” franchise started in 2014 with a sleeper hit that earned $86 million worldwide and blew up on home release. Each sequel has outperformed the last, with “Chapter 4” pulling in $440 million globally in 2023. Now the universe is growing bigger, and bloodier.
Donnie Yen, 60, is set to direct and executive produce his own Caine spinoff, which will begin filming in Hong Kong later this year. The script is being written by Mattson Tomlin, who’s also working on “The Batman Part II”.
For now, fans can expect more headshots, High Table betrayals, and stylish suits as John Wick picks up his gun one more time.
