Kevin Hunter Sues Over Wendy Williams’ Guardianship in Explosive $250M Lawsuit

Kevin Hunter, the former husband of TV personality Wendy Williams, has launched a $250 million lawsuit against nearly 50 individuals and institutions involved in her guardianship.

Filed on June 17, 2025, the lawsuit accuses them of violating Wendy Williams’ constitutional rights and calls her current legal guardianship a form of “civil death.”

Kevin Hunter, who was married to Wendy Williams from 1999 until their divorce in 2020, claims in court filings that the current setup has robbed Wendy of her freedom, dignity, and finances. The lawsuit names her guardian Sabrina Morrissey, Judge Lisa Sokoloff, Wells Fargo, her assisted living facility, and several attorneys as responsible parties.

According to the court documents, Hunter is not demanding the end of the guardianship altogether but is instead pushing for major changes. He wants a new, impartial guardian to take over her care, a full forensic accounting of her finances, the unsealing of her court records, and her release from what he calls “involuntary confinement.” On top of that, he’s seeking $250 million in damages for emotional distress, financial loss, reputational damage, and legal costs.

Hunter has also requested to be appointed as Williams’ “next friend”, a legal status that would allow him to act on her behalf, asserting that no one currently involved in the case is truly acting in her best interest. He argues that Wendy has been silenced and is unable to legally fight for herself.

The lawsuit was filed by attorney LaShawn Thomas, who stated, “I plan on laying out sufficient evidence to support our claims and ensure that her rights are vindicated and she is made whole financially.” He admits that Wendy may not fully grasp the legal process or the evidence behind the case but insists that her current guardianship is doing more harm than good.

Wendy Williams has also spoken out about her current living conditions. In a recent interview with NewsNation’s Banfield, she called her environment “suffocating,” saying she has been confined to the fifth floor of a facility labeled “the memory unit,” which she claims is meant for those who can’t remember anything. “I don’t have the freedom to do virtually anything,” she said. “I’ve met the people who live here and I’ve been here for almost a year now, and this is very suffocating.”

The guardianship was put in place in 2022 after Wendy was diagnosed with aphasia and frontotemporal dementia. It was initially meant to protect her well-being and finances, but critics like Hunter claim it’s turned into something oppressive and damaging.

With growing attention on guardianship abuse, especially in high-profile cases like this, Hunter’s lawsuit could spark serious public debate, and possibly legal reform. Whether or not the court agrees remains to be seen, but the next steps in this case are sure to be closely watched.
