Kyra Sedgwick recently shared that she felt unexpectedly emotional while filming a break-up scene with her real-life husband, Kevin Bacon, in their new romantic comedy The Best You Can.
The longtime couple, who have been married for 36 years, star opposite each other in the film, which premiered at the Tribeca Festival in New York.
At 59, Sedgwick admitted the scene struck a deeper chord than she had anticipated. “There was a moment in the break-up scene where I could not-I was very emotional,” she told audiences. “I knew my character would be emotional, but I had a little crossover of like, ‘Oh my God, what if this had happened [in real life]?’”
That brief mental detour into an alternate reality where their marriage didn’t survive hit hard. “Instead of what happened, which is that we’re still together, but ‘What if this had happened?’ And I got very emotional about it.”
For her, the moment blurred the line between fiction and reality. The idea of splitting from the man she’s built a life with-through ups, downs, and decades of partnership-was a tough one, even if it was all make-believe.
Kevin Bacon, 66, also reflected on the experience of working alongside his wife, saying it was a joy. “As soon as you get into a scene, you have a responsibility to your partner to make that scene work,” he told People. “And we’ve had a partnership for 37 years. To be able to take some of that time that we’ve had together and put it up on the screen is just really fun.”
Their real-life connection brought a deeper layer to their performances, and audiences can expect to feel that authenticity in The Best You Can.
Earlier this year, Kevin also opened up about parenting with Kyra and how they navigated fame while raising their two children, Travis, 35, and Sosie, 33. He shared that they made a conscious effort to keep their kids away from the limelight when they were younger.
“We really avoided it,” Kevin said on Mythical Kitchen’s Last Meals. “We knew how weird this life was. When you realize there’s always a chance that someone’s going to recognize you or have an opinion about you from something you did, it’s a weird way to live.”
While he’s grateful for the career he’s built, he acknowledged the strangeness of public life. “It’s 99 percent good, but a little weird,” he said.
As The Best You Can brings Kevin and Kyra’s on-screen chemistry to audiences, it’s clear that their off-screen bond only strengthens their performances-even when the scene calls for heartbreak.
