Comedian Jon Reep, best known for winning Season 5 of Last Comic Standing and appearing in Dodge commercials, was arrested Friday, Sept. 5, in North Carolina on multiple child sex crime charges.
According to the Hickory Police Department, the 53-year-old was indicted by a Catawba County grand jury on Sept. 2. He faces one count of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor and nine counts of third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor.
Police said the case originated from an Internet Crimes Against Children cyber tip received on April 15 from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The tip reportedly concerned child sexual abuse material linked to an online account.
“During the initial investigation, it was discovered that the account associated with this cyber tip belonged to Jonathan David Reep, 53, of Hickory,” authorities wrote in a press release.
Investigators executed a search warrant at a location tied to the IP address provided in the tip. Electronic devices were seized, and a digital forensic analysis of the equipment and other online communications was conducted, police said.
Reep had been scheduled to perform at the Paramount Theater in Goldsboro, N.C., on the same day as his arrest. Local outlet WSOC-TV reported that the performance was rescheduled following news of the charges.
The comedian gained national recognition after winning NBC’s Last Comic Standing in 2007. He also appeared in Netflix’s Brad Paisley’s Comedy Rodeo and Amazon Prime’s Ginger Beard Man. His television and commercial appearances made him a familiar face in the comedy world and beyond.
As of now, Reep remains charged with ten felony counts. Details on his bail conditions or next court appearance have not yet been released.
The Hickory Police Department emphasized that the investigation was part of its ongoing efforts to address internet-based child exploitation crimes.
