Luca Guadagnino is ready to explore artificial intelligence but with a twist.
The acclaimed director is in talks to helm Artificial, a new comedic drama currently in development at Amazon MGM Studios, according to Variety.
The project, titled Artificial, will explore AI themes through a comedic lens, though plot details are still tightly under wraps. The “Artificial” film marks another big collaboration between Luca Guadagnino and Amazon MGM, following the upcoming After the Hunt, set for release on October 10. That film stars Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield, and Ayo Edebiri, showing Guadagnino’s knack for assembling A-list casts.
This won’t be Luca’s first time working with Amazon MGM. He previously directed Challengers, released in 2024, starring Zendaya, Mike Faist, and Josh O’Connor. With Artificial, he seems to be continuing his streak with the studio-and venturing into new genre territory.
The script for Artificial is being written by Simon Rich, known for his sharp humor and clever storytelling. Rich, who is also producing, is joined by heavyweight producers David Heyman and Jeffrey Clifford. Jennifer Fox is reportedly in talks to produce as well.
Heyman spoke highly of Guadagnino, saying, “We’ve always wanted to work with Luca. His talent, his sensibility-he is a singular filmmaker, and I’m excited to be collaborating with him on this.”
Heyman’s involvement adds major clout. He’s closely tied to Amazon MGM already, producing the next James Bond film with Amy Pascal. His filmography includes Harry Potter, Fantastic Beasts, Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, Marriage Story, Gravity, and Barbie. That’s not even mentioning Paddington, Paddington 2, and Wonka, starring Timothée Chalamet.
Heyman also has several major projects coming up, including a Harry Potter TV series and Taika Waititi’s adaptation of Klara and the Sun starring Jenna Ortega and Amy Adams. He’s also producing Noah Baumbach’s Jay Kelly, with George Clooney and Adam Sandler.
As for Guadagnino, he’s best known for Call Me by Your Name and Bones and All. With Artificial, he may be turning his lens on the cultural moment surrounding AI-but in a way that makes us laugh, not panic.
Between Rich’s script, Heyman’s production weight, and Guadagnino’s distinct vision, Artificial could be one of the more unique films tackling AI yet. It’s still early days, but this one’s definitely worth keeping an eye on.
